Bidirectional mode-division multiplexers with antireflection gratings

Applied Optics, 2018
A bidirectional mode-division multiplexer (BMDM) with antireflection gratings is designed, and its performance in terms of S-parameters is presented. A BMDM can (de)multiplex three modes with only two waveguides and a Bragg grating. The impact of return losses on the performance of BMDMs is studied and antireflection gratings are designed to reduce ...

Multiplexing and switching for mode division multiplexed optical interconnects

2016 Progress in Electromagnetic Research Symposium (PIERS), 2016
We present some basic functional elements for mode division multiplexed optical interconnects including an inverse designed mode multiplexer, a thermo-optic based mode add-drop switch, and integrated modulators for mode division multiplexed interconnects.

Adaptive MIMO Signal Processing for Mode-division Multiplexing

Optical Fiber Communication Conference, 2012
The fiber-optic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel is analyzed. For a 6×6 MIMO experiment over 96 km few-mode fiber it is found that the mode dependent loss is 3 dB, with negligible temporal fluctuations and almost no impact on capacity.

Spatial Mode Division Multiplexing of Few Mode Fiber

European Conference and Exhibition on Optical Communication, 2012
The independent excitation and detection of spatial modes in few-mode fiber networks presents major challenges. This paper presents novel spatial mode-division-multiplexing techniques based on planar couplers and asymmetric Y-junctions. These developments may play a role in future high-capacity few-mode fiber telecommunications.

Optical Amplifiers for Mode Division Multiplexing

2018
Space division multiplexing (SDM) has attracted considerable attention from the optical fiber communication community as a promising means to increase the transmission capacity per fiber and, more importantly, to reduce the associated cost per transmitted information bit by utilizing multiple spatial channels within a single strand of glass.

Monolithically integrated reconfigurable add-drop multiplexer for mode-division-multiplexing systems

Optics Letters, 2016
An integrated reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer (ROADM) for mode-division-multiplexing systems is proposed and demonstrated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The present ROADM with four mode-channels is composed of a four-channel mode demultiplexer, four identical 2×2 thermo-optic Mach-Zehnder switches (MZSs), and a four ...

Mode division multiplexing MIMO-OFDM optical transmission

2012 17th Opto-Electronics and Communications Conference, 2012
Mode division multiplexing has become an interesting area of research in the search for further increasing fiber capacity. We review current research directions and report successful MIMO-OFDM transmission over two-mode fiber.

Compact mode-division multiplexing with folded metasurfaces

Metamaterials, Metadevices, and Metasystems 2020, 2020
To meet the demand for ever-increasing data transfer rates in fiber optic communications, there is great interest in space-division multiplexing of light. Mode-division multiplexing, a subset of space-division multiplexing, increases the channel capacity of a system by spatial conversion and coupling of optical signals into the orthogonal modes of a ...

Integrated mode converter for mode division multiplexing

SPIE Proceedings, 2016
The ever growing demands of bandwidth in optical communication systems are making traditional Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) based systems to reach its limit. In order to cope with future bandwidth demand is necessary to use new levels of orthogonality, such as the waveguide mode or the polarization state.

Mode-Division Multiplexing at Visible Wavelengths

CLEO 2024
We demonstrate mode-division multiplexing at visible wavelengths (473 nm) for the first time using adiabatic mode couplers. We measure less than -15 dB and -20 dB crosstalk for TE2 and TE3 higher-order mode couplers, respectively.
