Ectomycorrhizal fungi and root water uptake respond independently to water availability

open access: yesOikos, Volume 2025, Issue 11, November 2025.
Temperate forests on their warm and dry distribution limits are expected to be most vulnerable to reductions in water availability. This prediction is mostly based on studies assessing single forest functions, mainly growth. Water and nutrient cycling are functions that rely on tree roots and their symbiotic association with ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi.

Reconfigurable photonic integrated mode (de)multiplexer for SDM fiber transmission [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
A photonic integrated circuit for mode multiplexing and demultiplexing in a few-mode fiber is presented and demonstrated. Two 10 Gbit/s channels at the same wavelength and polarization are simultaneously transmitted over modes LP01 and LP11a of a few ...

Recent Advancements in Mode Division Multiplexing for Communication and Computation in Silicon Photonics [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Lightwave Technology
Mode Division Multiplexing (MDM) is a technique used over the past decade in Silicon Photonics (SiPh) to incorporate more data into communication links by employing higher-order transverse electric or transverse magnetic modes.

Advanced Optical Integration Processes for Photonic‐Integrated Circuit Packaging

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, Volume 10, Issue 19, October 7, 2025.
Photonic integrated chip packaging is a growing technology that helps make devices faster, more efficient, and more compact by using light instead of electricity. This review highlights recent progress in making these chips work better at different levels, discusses current challenges like heat and alignment, and looks at future possibilities for ...

Non-paraxial design and fabrication of a compact OAM sorter in the telecom infrared

open access: yes, 2019
A novel optical device is designed and fabricated in order to overcome the limits of the traditional sorter based on log-pol optical transformation for the demultiplexing of optical beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM).

Exact Model for Mode-Dependent Gains and Losses in Multimode Fiber

open access: yes, 2012
In the strong mode coupling regime, the model for mode-dependent gains and losses (collectively referred as MDL) of a multimode fiber is extended to the region with large MDL. The MDL is found to have the same statistical properties as the eigenvalues of

Add/Drop Mode-Division Multiplexer Based on a Mach–Zehnder Interferometer and Periodic Waveguides

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2015
Mode-division multiplexing (MDM) is currently under study due to its potential to further increase data rates in optical communication circuits. In this paper, we propose an add/drop MDM for the first- and second-order modes that cover the whole C-Band ...
