, 1989 We report on the theory and experimental verification of a new type of laser. Traditional lasers are operated in a region where the output bandwidth is of the order of the small-signal gain bandwidth. Instead, we report on mode-locked laser operation with a bandwidth that is much larger than the small-signal gain bandwidth.
