Reductive Modes

Periodica Mathematica Hungarica, 1998
A mode is an idempotent and entropic algebra, i.e., every singleton is a subalgebra and each operation is a homomorphism. A mode is \(n\)-step left reductive if it has a binary term and satisfies the identity: \[ x_1\cdot (x_2\cdot \dots(x_n\cdot y)\dots)=x_1\cdot(x_2\cdot\dots(x_n\cdot z)\dots).

Is Translation a Mode?*

European Journal of English Studies, 2008
This essay argues that globalization and the politics of translation need to be thought through together as part of the same problematic. Globalization functions like a language and it is crucial that the world speak in many languages rather than adopt the voice of dominant or hegemonic monolingualism.

Triads as Modes within Scales as Modes

2015
The paper revisits results from scale theory through the study of modes. Point of departure is the nested hierarchy of triads embedded into diatonic modes embedded into the chromatic scale. Generic diatonic triads can be described as stacks of thirds or as stacks of triple-fifths.

The mode detangler

Optics Letters
Astrophotonics aims to transfer photonic technology to the development of compact astronomical instruments. However, light coupling from a multimode fiber, typically adopted in modern observatories, to a single-mode photonic device still poses a challenge.

Modes of analogy

1989
There are two main conclusions that emerge from this paper, besides clearing up some of the confusion that invariably results from not distinguishing different modes of “analogy” and talking about it as if it were just one process. First of all, I have emphasized the underlying process of interpretation that plays a key role in analogy by rendition and

No Mode of Being, No Mode of Signifying

Vivarium
Abstract The Destructions of the Modes of Signifying (henceforth: dms) is an anonymous fourteenth-century polemic against modist speculative grammar (grammatica speculativa). Wielding Ockhamist logic and metaphysics, the dms repeatedly attacks the very root of modism: the claim that the grammatical features of language are grounded in the ...

The scissors mode

2008
A dipole magnetic resonance has been predicted in deformed nuclei by a two-rotor model, as a state in which the nucleus rotates while the proton neutron symmetry axes stay a fixed angle in a scissors-like configuration.
