Assessing the Efficiency of Mass Transit Systems in the United States [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Frustrated with increased parking problems, unstable gasoline prices, and stifling traffic congestion, a growing number of metropolitan city dwellers consider utilizing the mass transit system.

A Filter‐Matrix Lattice‐Boltzmann Methodology for Convective Melting and Solidification

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids, EarlyView.
We propose a new methodology for simulating melting and solidification that can be used in lattice‐Boltzmann schemes that are based on filter‐matrix collision operators. The methodology includes an iteration‐free source‐based enthalpy method for phase‐change and an immersed boundary technique.

Mass transit options [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Choices on public transit options are choices about a city's future. Will there be congestion? Will there be high levels of air and noise pollution? Will transport be affordable? Will services be available to all?

Walkability and Mental Health Resiliency During the COVID‐19 Pandemic

open access: yesHealth Economics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study investigates if local walkability helped mitigate the well‐documented mental health impacts of the COVID‐19 pandemic. Walkability may improve mental health by facilitating walking (which our data suggest occurred during the pandemic), as well as through other avenues such as time spent outdoors and improved social ties.

Governing Within Semirigid Limits: Navigating the Centralization–Decentralization Paradox in Blockchain‐Based Platforms

open access: yesJournal of Operations Management, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Blockchain‐based platforms can facilitate data sharing and coordination in interorganizational ecosystems by enabling secure, tamper‐evident recordkeeping and streamlined, trust‐minimized transactions across organizational boundaries. However, their decentralized architecture may conflict with the centralized control exercised by platform ...

Maximizing Ferries in New York City's Emergency Management Planning [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
In addition to providing fast, efficient, and enjoyable public transportation under normal circumstances, ferries have consistently proven to be the most resilient mode of transit during and after emergencies.

Narrow Linewidth Laser Based on Extended Topological Interface States in 1D Photonic Crystals

open access: yesLaser &Photonics Reviews, EarlyView.
This work introduces a novel 1D‐TISE‐PhC semiconductor laser structure achieving uniform photon distribution, reduced linewidth (126 kHz), robust single‐mode performance (SMSR up to 50 dB), precise wavelength control, and tolerance to fabrication variations, demonstrated experimentally in an eight‐channel array.

Neighborhood Crime and Transit Station Access Mode choice - Phase III of Neighborhood Crime and Travel Behavior [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
This report provides the findings from the third phase of a three-part study about the influences of neighborhood crimes on travel mode choice. While previous phases found evidence that high levels of neighborhood crime discourage people from choosing to

A Perspective of Multi‐Reflecting TOF MS

open access: yesMass Spectrometry Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry (TOF MS) excels in rapid and high‐sensitivity analysis, making it a cornerstone of analytical chemistry. But as sample complexity explodes in omics studies, so does the need for higher resolving power to ensure accurate results.

Sustainable Solar Module Through the Substitution of Materials by Renewable Encapsulation, Recycled Backsheet, and Lead‐Free Interconnection

open access: yesProgress in Photovoltaics: Research and Applications, EarlyView.
This study shows a path to greater sustainability in PV module materials that have passed the IEC 61730 and IEC 61215 test procedures. A lead‐free ECA solar cell connection, EVA based on 60% renewable raw materials, and a backsheet made from 30% recycled PET show no weaknesses compared with lead solder and petroleum‐based polymers.
