Coupling of Modes of Propagation

Journal of Applied Physics, 1954
When two lossless modes of propagation are coupled, waves which increase or decrease with distance may arise when the power flow of the two modes is in opposite directions or when power is generated in the coupling device. This behavior is characteristic of wave filters, traveling-wave tubes, double-stream amplifiers, and space-charge-wave amplifiers ...

Coupling of Modes

1993
In waveguides whose refractive index profiles are independent of the z-coordinate, the energy of a mode remains constant over the whole length. The superposition of two propagating modes a and b of the same frequency can be written as $$ E = (x,y,z) = A exp\{ \mp i{\beta _a}z\} {\hat E_a}(x,y) + B exp\{ \mp i{\beta _b}z\} {\hat E_b}(x,y), $$ (5 ...

Analogies Between Coupled-Mode Gate Vibration and Coupled-Mode Flutter

2017
In this chapter the similarities between the Tacoma Narrows Bridge failure in 1940 and the Folsom Dam gate failure in 1995 are examined. In both cases, static design guidelines were followed in the design of the structure under the assumption that large, massive structures would not be susceptible to dynamic excitation.
