Mode division multiplexing in optical fibers

Applied Optics, 1982
Two modes have been launched into a conventional 10-m long multimode graded-index optical fiber using spatial filtering techniques. The measured cross talk between the two modes in the baseband is -20 dB at the output end of the fiber. Modal multiplexing thus appears to be possible over short fiber lengths.

Mode insensitive switch for on-chip interconnect mode division multiplexing systems.

Optics Letters, 2020
A mode insensitive switch is proposed and experimentally demonstrated on a silicon-on-insulator platform using a balanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer structure with a mode insensitive phase shifter for on-chip mode division multiplexing interconnects ...

On-chip multiplexing conversion between wavelength division multiplexing–polarization division multiplexing and wavelength division multiplexing–mode division multiplexing

Optics Letters, 2014
A compact silicon-on-insulator device used for conversions between polarization division multiplexing (PDM) and mode division multiplexing (MDM) signals is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by utilizing a structure combining the improved two-dimensional grating coupler and two-mode multiplexer.

Degenerate Mode-Group Division Multiplexing

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2012
A reconfigurable mode demultiplexer based around a liquid crystal spatial light modulator is demonstrated to optically demultiplex modes that share a propagation constant as separate modal channels using a single shared phase mask per polarization for all channels.

A Flexible and Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer for Mode Division Multiplexing Systems

IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 2020
Reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer (ROADM) is one of the key building blocks for on-chip optical networks, which can download the desired signals from the bus waveguide to the corresponding drop port and upload the local signals from the add ...

On-chip mode division multiplexing technologies

SPIE Proceedings, 2016
Space division multiplexing (SDM) is currently widely investigated in order to provide enhanced capacity thanks to the utilization of space as a new degree of multiplexing freedom in both optical fiber communication and on-chip interconnects. Basic components allowing the processing of spatial modes are critical for SDM applications.

Integrated mode converter for mode division multiplexing

SPIE Proceedings, 2016
The ever growing demands of bandwidth in optical communication systems are making traditional Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) based systems to reach its limit. In order to cope with future bandwidth demand is necessary to use new levels of orthogonality, such as the waveguide mode or the polarization state.

Few-mode fibers for mode-division multiplexing

2013 IEEE Photonics Society Summer Topical Meeting Series, 2013
The design of few-mode fibers will be discussed from the point of view of key attributes and fundamental limitations. We will consider the maximum number of modes that might be supported in a practical fiber.
