Metformin mediates mitochondrial quality control in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) fibroblasts carrying mtDNA mutations. At therapeutic levels, metformin activates AMPK signaling to restore mitochondrial dynamics by promoting fusion and restraining fission, while preserving mitochondrial mass, enhancing autophagy/mitophagy and biogenesis ...

Helicon modes in uniform plasmas. I. Low m modes
Physics of Plasmas, 2015Helicons are whistler modes with azimuthal wave numbers. They arise in bounded gaseous and solid state plasmas, but the present work shows that very similar modes also exist in unbounded uniform plasmas. The antenna properties determine the mode structure. A simple antenna is a magnetic loop with dipole moment aligned either along or across the ambient

Mode I, Mode II and Mixed Mode (I/II) Delaminations in Aerospace Composites
2021Composites play an increasingly important role in contemporary aircraft. Delaminations are of significant concern for composites and have been observed in aircraft in operational use. Compliance with criteria defined in JSSG2006 requires growth of delaminations to be either avoided, or to be predictable, slow and stable. This thesis examines historical

La vie mode d'emploi: mode d'emploi
Orbis Litterarum, 1984Peree's La vie mode d'emploi is a fascinatingly dense, wide‐ranging, and allusive novel. The article looks at some aspects of this richness of texture, paradoxically generated from an arbitrary mathematical structure, and suggests that the novel, with its deliberate contradictions, is, fittingly, an account of the process of reading.

Alfred's epistemological metaphors: eagan modes and scip modes
Anglo-Saxon England, 2006AbstractKing Alfred's translations successively develop the metaphors of eagan modes and scip modes to render the implicit and explicit psychological contexts of nautical and ocular images in their Latin source-texts. The increasing complexity and independence of the metaphorical modification evident in the Old English translations suggest the order in

Normal mode analysis of 2,2′-bipyridine—I. Internal modes
Spectrochimica Acta Part A: Molecular Spectroscopy, 1983Abstract The vibrational assignment of the internal modes of 2,2′-bipyridine is discussed using i.r. and Raman spectra in polarized light for a single crystal and for two different orientations of polycrystalline films. Predictions based on zero-order frequency calculations provide a useful guideline for the identification of the in plane ...

Crack tip plastic zone under Mode I, Mode II and mixed mode (I+II) conditions
Structural Engineering and Mechanics, 2010The shape and size of the plastic zone around the crack tip are analyzed under pure mode I, pure mode II and mixed mode (I+II) loading for small scale yielding and for both plane stress and plane strain conditions. A new analytical formulation is presented to determine the radius of the plastic zone in a non-dimensional form.

The mode structure of high-n resistive ballooning modes
Physics of Fluids B: Plasma Physics, 1992The higher-order corrections (in an n−1/2 expansion) to resistive ballooning theory are analyzed in order to gain information about the radial structure of the Δ′-driven modes. This higher-order theory also predicts that the ballooning phase angle θ0 (which is undetermined in the leading-order theory) must be chosen so as to maximize the value of Δ ...
