Abstract Recently, Van Zwet (1979) has discussed several conditions under which the celebrated mean‐median‐mode inequality holds. This note points out that Van Zwet's basic condition and its variants have a simple interpretation in terms of a well‐known stochastic ordering.

Dynamic effects in mode III crack bifurcation
International Journal of Solids and Structures, 1986Transient elastodynamic nonplanar self-similar Mode III crack growth in brittle materials is examined. The dynamic similarity and Chaplygin's transformation reduce the class of problems considered to the solution of Laplace's equation in a semi-infinite strip.

Mixed Mode II-Mode III Fracture of Adhesive Joints
Journal of Composites Technology and Research, 1995This paper presents approximate closed-form expressions for the local energy release rate in Mode I, Mode II, and Mode III along the idealized straight crack front of a cracked generalized adhesive joint. The development is based on beam theory, the J-integral, and a beam-on-an-elastic-foundation model.

Some aspects of fatigue thresholds under mode III and mixed mode III and I loadings
International Journal of Fatigue, 1996Abstract Fatigue threshold behaviour under mode III and in-phase mixed mode III and I loading conditions has been studied in a 3.5% NiCrMoV steel, using V-notched and precracked cylindrical bar specimens at load ratios R = 0.1 and −1. Comparisons have been made between the results from V-notched, precracked specimens and the results from earlier ...

Loading Mode (Mode I/Mode III) Testing for Stress Corrosion Cracking
1984The use of loading mode variation (Modes I and III) to identify the mechanisms of stress corrosion cracking is reviewed and evaluated, and some recent results on 7075 and 7090 aluminum are presented. It is concluded that the conventional interpretation (that anodic dissolution dominates when results in Modes I and III are similar, and hydrogen ...

Mode III Loading of Composite Panels
Journal of Aircraft, 2016Efficient design of modern aircraft requires an understanding of the mechanical behavior of carbon fiber panels under both in-plane and out-of-plane loading conditions. Currently, relatively little published literature exists for out-of-plane shear (mode III) loading.

Oscillations in Plasma III (Dipole Mode)
Journal of the Physical Society of Japan, 1963In a hot cathode discharge tube dipole oscillations having the frequency of \(f_{p}/\sqrt{2}\) were observed without applying external oscillating electric fields, where f p is the frequency of the plasma electron oscillation. In the presence of a weak magnetic field the dipole oscillation splitted into two oscillations whose frequencies were given by \
