[Multilingualism and Mixed-Mode Communication

open access: yes, 2023
Like other disciplines, the field of sociolinguistics is not a homogenous one. It rather comes in three “loosely connected waves” (Eckert 2012) with each wave applying specific sets of methods. How can we use methodological triangulation and combine these methods, both quantitative and qualitative in nature, to integrate the three waves of ...

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Orthogonal Self-Similarity Decomposition (OSSD): A Delay-Based Framework for Multiscale Time Series Analysis with Applications in Hydrological Forecasting

open access: yesFractal and Fractional
Decomposition of nonlinear, nonstationary multicomponent signals remains challenging for existing decomposition strategies, including frequency-based, data-driven, and subspace methods, which can suffer from mode mixing, leakage across components, and ...

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

A Parameterization of Local and Remote Tidal Mixing

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2020
Vertical mixing is often regarded as the Achilles' heel of ocean models. In particular, few models include a comprehensive and energy‐constrained parameterization of mixing by internal ocean tides.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

The research progress of empirical mode decomposition and mode mixing elimination

open access: yesDianzi Jishu Yingyong, 2019
The Empirical Mode Decomposition(EMD) algorithm proposed by Huang is a data driven adaptive analysis method for nonlinear time-varying signals. The signals can be decomposed into a few Intrinsic Mode Functions(IMFs) components with physical meaning ...

A Mixing Process Influenced by Wall Jet-Induced Shock Waves in Supersonic Flow

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2022
With the development of hypersonic air-breathing propulsion systems, such as the supersonic combustion ramjet (Scramjet) and rocket-based combined cycle (RBCC) engines, the mixing process of supersonic airstream with fuel in the engine combustor has been

Tracking text in mixed-mode documents [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the ACM conference on Document processing systems - DOCPROCS '88, 1988
This paper describes a method for extracting arbitrarily oriented text in documents containing both text and graphics. The technique presented is inspired by the tracking algorithms frequently found in raster to vector conversion systems. By identifying text components in the document, reducing the resolution of the image by the size of the characters,
