‘Fitting nonlinear models: numerical techniques’
Biometrika, 1973SUMMARY Computational methods for fitting nonlinear models have developed considerably in the last decade. Statistical use of these techniques has, as yet, lagged somewhat behind. The present paper gives a critical review of current numerical techniques and relates these to some statistical needs.

Kauffman (1993, 1995; Kauffman and Levin 1987; Kauffman and Johnsen 1991) has proposed and studied in depth a class of models referred to as NK models, which are models of random fitness landscapes on which one can implement a variety of types of evolutionary dynamics and study the development and interaction of species.

This demonstration illustrates a computational analysis method using information theoretic attributes to quantitatively characterize information need for task performance, as well as information conveyed by a candidate display. Once represented in this way, various computational algorithms can provide a "mismatch" analysis of the "fit" between the two.

In this chapter we introduce regression models, i.e., how to fit (regress) one, or more quantities, against each other through a functional relationship and estimate any unknown parameters that dictate this relationship. Questions of interest include: how to deal with samples affected by selection effects?
