Analytic Model for Scaling of Breakdown

Physical Review Letters, 1991
A theory is presented for the time-dependent breakdown of a network of spring (fuse) elements where the probability of breaking an element under load-sigma is sigma-eta. For all eta, it predicts the system-size scaling of the number of broken elements at breakdown round in simulations.

Scales and Scaling in the Kondo Model

Physical Review Letters, 1981
The thermodynamics of the Kondo model is formulated in terms of coupled integral equations and various properties deduced, in particular the scaling property. Then, with definition of the various scales parametrizing various asymptotic regions of the H-T plane, universal numbers are calculated and, in particular, Wilson's result is obtained ...

Couplings and scales in superstring models

Physical Review Letters, 1985
The domains of weak coupling of superstring theories are identified. Compactifications on Calabi-Yau spaces encounter a problem related to vacuum stability. Although the string theory may be weakly coupled and a semiclassical approximation may be valid, both theoretical and phenomenological arguments indicate that the nonlinear σ model on the string ...

A model for equisection scaling

Behavioral Science, 2007
The construction of an interval scale by equisection methods requires only that the subject partition a segment of a “physical” continuum into “subjectively equal” intervals with respect to the psychological attribute which is being scaled. Although many investigators have used these methods to construct scales, interest has focused primarily on ...

Subgrid-Scale modeling

EAS Publications Series, 2006
The purpose of this lecture is to give an overview of the subgrid scale models used for Large Eddy Simulations (LES). The first models where essentially eddy-viscosity models, where the turbulent viscosity coefficient was found by simple dimensional considerations (the mixing length theory) or taking into account Kolmogorov theory ...

The Scale Model as a Paradigm of Information Systems. The Large-Scale Model of Pompei

2018
The research starts analyzing the history and the survey techniques that were employed to carry out the large-scale model of Pompei. It was made of cork between 1861 and 1940 and it is now exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Naples. The scale model covers an area of about 25 m2 and it reproduces with great meticulousness and detail the main ...

Modelling roughness in scale models

Journal of Hydraulic Research, 2010
Physical hydraulic scale models are valuable tools for engineers to use when solving complex hydraulic problems. Several manuals exist to aid engineers in appropriately modelling a hydraulic structure; however, information on modelling hydraulic roughness in the current literature is scattered and incomplete.
