Adaptations in equine axial movement and muscle activity occur during induced fore‐ and hindlimb lameness: A kinematic and electromyographic evaluation during in‐hand trot

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Journal, Volume 55, Issue 6, Page 1112-1127, November 2023., 2023
Abstract Background The inter‐relationship between equine thoracolumbar motion and muscle activation during normal locomotion and lameness is poorly understood. Objective To compare thoracolumbar and pelvic kinematics and longissimus dorsi (longissimus) activity of trotting horses between baseline and induced forelimb (iFL) and hindlimb (iHL) lameness.

Climate and crown damage drive tree mortality in southern Amazonian edge forests

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 110, Issue 4, Page 876-888, April 2022., 2022
Tree death is a key process for our understanding of how forests are responding to global change. Our long‐term research shows that more than 70% of all trees dying in this critical region at the edge of Amazonia already had markedly broken and damaged crowns years before they died.

Effects of forest degradation on Amazonian ferns in a land‐bridge island system as revealed by non‐specialist inventories

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 3, Issue 1, January–March 2022., 2022
Tropical forests have been rapidly deforested and degradation worldwide has outpaced biodiversity field sampling. We here show that a simple sampling protocol carried out by a non‐specialist can lead to inexpensive and highly reliable ecological data.

Evaluation of a clinical scoring system for canine demodicosis

open access: yesVeterinary Dermatology, Volume 32, Issue 4, Page 311-e84, August 2021., 2021
Background – Canine demodicosis is a common disease in small animal practice. Although a number of studies evaluating treatment efficacy for canine demodicosis have used clinical scoring systems, none have been validated. Objectives – This study evaluated the validity, reliability, reproducibility and sensitivity to change of a clinical scoring system ...

Warming of aquatic ecosystems disrupts aquatic–terrestrial linkages in the tropics

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 90, Issue 7, Page 1623-1634, July 2021., 2021
Using tank‐bromeliads, the authors experimentally investigated for the first time how aquatic–terrestrial linkages are affected by warming in the tropics. In contrast to temperate regions, warming is predicted to cause strong declines in tropical aquatic insect emergence into terrestrial ecosystems, while variably affecting terrestrial detritus ...

Development curves of communication and social interaction in individuals with cerebral palsy

open access: yesDevelopmental Medicine &Child Neurology, Volume 62, Issue 1, Page 132-139, January 2020., 2020
Aim To determine development curves of communication and social interaction from childhood into adulthood for individuals with cerebral palsy (CP). Method This Pediatric Rehabilitation Research in the Netherlands (PERRIN)‐DECADE study longitudinally assessed 421 individuals with CP, aged from 1 to 20 years at baseline, after 13 years (n=121 at follow ...
