A Programmable Semiconductor Containing Active Molecular Photoswitches Located in the Crystal's Volume Phase

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A novel approach for the design of functional semiconductors is presented, which utilizes the excellent optoelectronic properties of layered hybrid perovskites and the possibility to introduce a molecular photoswitch as the organic spacer. This concept is successfully demonstrated on a coumarin‐based system with the possibility to change the bandgap ...

Against Alienation: The Emancipative Potential of Critical Pedagogy in Fromm [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Critical theory generally refers to a series of pathways for Marxist-inspired intellectual inquiry that first emerged with the end of the 18th century European Enlightenment and in particular with the initial widespread waning of intellectual confidence ...

All‐Aqueous Pullulan Fibers Enabling Visible‐to‐Near‐Infrared Waveguiding with Mechanical and Thermal Resilience

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Pullulan, a biomass‐derived polysaccharide, is transformed into transparent optical fibers using a solvent‐free borax hydrogel‐spinning method. The fibers outperform PMMA with ≈200 MPa tensile strength and 200 °C stability, while uniquely guiding visible‐to‐NIR light and enabling additive‐free humidity sensing.

The Theory of Functional Differentiation and the History of Modern Society. Reflections on the Reception of Systems Theory in Recent Historiography [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Contrary to other key elements of Luhmann’s systems theoretical sociology, his theory of functional differentiation has not been widely received among historians of modern society. The article is discussing some reasons for this situation.

Scalable Thermal Engineering via Femtosecond Laser‐Direct‐Written Phononic Nanostructures

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates that femtosecond laser‐induced periodic surface structures (fs‐LIPSS) can function as phononic metasurfaces, reducing thermal conductivity below the plain thin‐film limit. Phonon Monte Carlo analysis reveals that the periodic structures restrict phonon mean free paths.

Mechanistic Insights into a Synergistic FeOx/Fe‐N4 System for Practical Nitrate Abatement with Value‐Added Ammonia Recovery

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work provides a novel interpretation of the nitrate reduction mechanism on iron oxides (FeOx) by employing constant‐potential density functional calculations and reports the design and synthesis of a robust and high‐performance Fe3O4/Fe‐N4‐C catalyst with remarkable Faradaic efficiency, current density, and stability under practical reaction ...

The kingdom of God and modern society

open access: yesIn die Skriflig, 2001
The kingdom of God implies God’s rule in the regenerated heart. Consideration of the kingdom and modern society should be understood ecclesiologically. Herman Ridderbos’ notion of the relation of church and kingdom (sign, first-fruits, and instrument) is
