Polymer Modified Asphalt Binders

1992
Description Peer-reviewed papers discus the use of elastomers such as styrene block copolymers, latex rubber, and various plastomers that include EVA and polyethylene. In 2 sections: laboratory studies of polymer modified asphalt binders for it mix asphalt; and emulsions and full scale field experiments which explore construction aspects

Creep Compliance of Polymer-Modified Asphalt, Asphalt Mastic, and Hot-Mix Asphalt

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2003
The possibility of using commercial rheometers for comprehensive testing of asphalt binders, asphalt mastics, and hot-mix asphalts (HMA) is explored. Samples of one polymer-modified asphalt, its mix with fine mineral filler (mastic), and one HMA prepared with the same modified asphalt as binders were tested in the dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and the

Highly Modified Asphalt Binder for Asphalt Crack Relief Mix

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2017
Reflective cracking is a common issue with respect to rehabilitated asphalt pavements, especially when the rehabilitation is done by applying a hot-mix asphalt overlay on the existing damaged pavement. Several approaches can be adopted to delay reflective cracking.

Composite Asphalt Binders: Effect of Modified RPE on Asphalt

Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering, 2000
This study prepared and characterized recycled polyethylene (RPE) modified asphalts. The RPE was modified with different copolymers before incorporating into the asphalt. A special morphology was found for this system. The RPE particles are highly swollen by asphalt. This morphology is attributed to physical interactions.

Outdoor aging of road asphalt and SBS modified asphalt

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering, 2010
The process of performance degradation of road asphalt (RA) is regarded as aging. At present, better understanding of the thermal-oxidative aging of asphalt is achieved and the corresponding method to evaluate this process is developed; meanwhile, photo-oxidative aging (aging in an atmospheric environment, which is referred to as “outdoor aging” in ...

Long Lasting Asphalt Materials with Highly Modified Asphaltic Binder

2020
On mature road networks, there is a constant need for long-term pavement preservation solutions. In the 1980s, SBS polymer brought a breakthrough technology with superior performance for surface layer. In more recent years, highly modified asphaltic binder, HiMA, took a step further for structural layers with fatigue resistance.

Compound Modified Asphalt Performance Research

Advanced Materials Research, 2012
The scrap rubber powder and the waste plastic compound modified bituminous mixture are used in the first-class highway asphalt concrete pavement. They can not only reduce the environment pollution, but also enhance the operational performance of bituminous pavement. It has the economical, social and the environment three aspect remarkable benefit. This

Feasibility study of asphalt-modified mortars using asphalt emulsion

Construction and Building Materials, 2006
Abstract Asphalt emulsion is manufactured by emulsification of asphalt, and it is an energy-saving, ecologically safe material because it does not need any heating processes creating gas emission and fire hazard in its use. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility on the use of an asphalt emulsion as a polymeric admixture.

Application of Diatomite Modified Asphalt

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2013
The present domestic modifiers are mainly by-products of petroleum --- costing high and non-renewable, which lead to the difficulty in their wide use. This paper explores the mechanisms of purified diatomite, enhancing the stability of asphalt mixture under high temperature, low temperature or with water.
