Standard methods of characterization of bitumen, BIT, and of polymer modified bitumen, PmBs, do not provide sufficient information. We propose to rely on determination of rheological properties which are much more informative. Along theses lines, we have determined rheology before and after the Rolling Thin Film Oven Test, RTFOT.

Properties of Polymer Modified Bitumen after Rubber-Bitumen Interaction
Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering, 2002This paper describes results from a laboratory investigation into the effects of the interaction between a styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modified bitumen and recycled crumb rubber on the mechanical performance of impact absorbing asphalt (IAA), an asphaltic material that has applications as a sports and safety surface.

Investigation on the properties of new palm-oil-based polyurethane modified bitumen
, 2021Polyurethane-derived polymer synthesized by the reaction of 4.4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) with the new modified palm-oil-based polyol was used as an alternative additive to thermoplastic-elastomers, such as styrene–butadienestyrene (SBS), the ...

Modified sulfur bitumen binders for bitumen-mineral compositions
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2019The properties of modified sulfur bitumen binders based on viscous petroleum bitumen, industrial sulfur and polymeric petroleum resin were studied. In selecting the compositions of the modified sulfur bitumen binders, the experiment planning method was used.

Polymer‐modified bitumen of recycled LDPE and maleated bitumen
Journal of Applied Polymer Science, 2012AbstractMaleated bitumen was prepared by the reaction of penetration grade bitumen (80/100) with maleic anhydride at 150°C for 2 h under nitrogen atmosphere. The effectiveness of maleation was assessed in bitumen–recycled low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) blends in terms of their softening point and elastic recovery.

Conventional bitumen is a viscoelastic material composed of asphaltene and maltene. It is prepared by air-blowing, but this approach makes the bitumen more brittle and susceptible to temperatures. To decrease the temperature susceptibility, synthetic polymers or additives are used to make polymer-modified bitumens.
