Influence of Polyphosphoric Acid on the Consistency and Composition of Formulated Bitumen: Standard Characterization and NMR Insights

open access: yesJournal of Analytical Methods in Chemistry, 2016
Over the recent years, bitumen modification with polymers, acids, or mineral fillers has gained relevance to adjust its performance properties. This work reports the use of polyphosphoric acid (PPA) for the modification of formulated bitumen.

Seismic Versus Sub‐Seismic Experimental Mirror‐Like Fault Surfaces in Bituminous Dolostones

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Mirror‐like Surfaces (MSs) are ultra‐polished surfaces frequently found in exhumed seismogenic fault zones in carbonates. They form over a wide range of pressure‐temperature conditions and slip rates, from seismic (≈1 m/s) to sub‐seismic (≈0.1–100 μm/s), reflecting distinct phases of the seismic cycle.

Study of the zero shear viscosity of SBS copolymer modified bitumens

open access: yesBudownictwo i Architektura, 2014
The paper presents the results of the zero shear viscosity (ZSV) determined by using a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR). The tests were conducted with the use of 50/70 penetration grade bitumen produced from Venezuelan and Russian crude oils (named V50/70 ...

The Unexpected Discovery of Paleocene? Coals in Outcrops Thought to Be Cambrian, Al Huqf, Oman

open access: yesJournal of Petroleum Geology, Volume 49, Issue 4, Page 1179-1194, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Two brown organic deposits were encountered whilst investigating kaolinitic claystones thought to occur at the base of a Cambrian formation at outcrop. The age of these organic deposits is probably Paleocene from palynology. Organic petrography shows that they are subbituminous coals with some oil source potential.

Fluid Injection Triggers Large‐Scale Slow‐Slip Activation of the Rocky Mountain Fold and Thrust Belt

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 17, 16 September 2026.
Abstract Using interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) we show that hydraulic fracturing treatments near the subsurface deformation limit of the Rocky Mountain Fold and Thrust Belt produced 12 intraplate, aseismic, slow‐slip events with magnitudes Mw ${M}_{w}$ 4.71–5.06 at 1,640–2,410 m depths.

Synthesis of functionalized polyolefins in a new continuous bench‐scale reactor apparatus

open access: yesAIChE Journal, Volume 72, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract In‐reactor functionalized polyolefins (FPOs), produced by molecular catalysts, are a new class of polymer materials with applications ranging from high performance adhesives to bitumen compatibilization. In this work, we disclose a procedure for the synthesis of FPOs in a new Continuous Bench‐scale Reactor Apparatus (COBRA).

In‐situ asphaltene capture with iron oxide nanoparticles in steam‐assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) for improved recovery and partial upgrading of bitumen

open access: yesThe Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, Volume 104, Issue 9, Page 4787-4808, September 2026.
Key improvements obtained by incorporating nanoparticles into a lab‐scale SAGD process configuration. The bar plots show enhanced oil recovery, reduced viscosity, and increased asphaltene adsorption in nanoparticle‐assisted scenarios compared with conventional SAGD.
