Multicriteria GIS‐based analysis for the evaluation of the vulnerability of the marine environment in the Gulf of Trieste (north‐eastern Adriatic Sea) for sustainable blue economy and maritime spatial planning

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 5, Issue 6, Page 2006-2025, December 2023., 2023
Abstract The Gulf of Trieste, is a shallow semi‐enclosed sea of about 500 km2 in the north‐eastern part of the Adriatic Sea. The coastal and marine areas of the Italian region Friuli Venezia Giulia, which borders most of the Gulf of Trieste, are subject to significant pressure from human activities, especially in terms of maritime traffic, ports ...

Decoding the drivers of deep‐time wetland biodiversity: insights from an early Permian tropical lake ecosystem

open access: yesPalaeontology, Volume 66, Issue 3, May/June 2023., 2023
Abstract Wetlands are important to continental evolution, providing both arenas and refugia for emerging and declining biotas. This significance and the high preservation potential make the resulting fossiliferous deposits essential for our understanding of past and future biodiversity.

Tropical and subtropical Asia's valued tree species under threat

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 36, Issue 3, June 2022., 2022
Abstract Tree diversity in Asia's tropical and subtropical forests is central to nature‐based solutions. Species vulnerability to multiple threats, which affect provision of ecosystem services, is poorly understood. We conducted a region‐wide, spatially explicit assessment of the vulnerability of 63 socioeconomically important tree species to ...

Factors determining bryophyte species richness and community composition on insular siliceous erratic boulders in calcareous landscapes

open access: yesJournal of Vegetation Science, Volume 32, Issue 6, November/December 2021., 2021
We studied bryophytes on insular erratic boulders. Confirming predictions of island biogeography, the species–area curve for boulder specialists was steeper than for generalist bryophytes. Species richness was positively related to boulder size while community composition mainly reflected a boulder's location inside vs outside of forests.

Popularizing Structural Geology: Exemplary Structural Geosites from the Apuan Alps UNESCO Global Geopark (Northern Apennines, Italy) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
Popularizing endogenic geological processes that act deep on the Earth during geologic time producing orogenic belts requires a great effort. Consequently, geosites dealing with structural geology are surveyed with a lower frequency.
