Estimating sub pixel snow cover area by a new spectral unmixing method using MODIS data and ASTER data

SPIE Proceedings, 2007
Snow cover area is a very critical parameter for hydrologic cycle of the Earth. Furthermore, it will be a key factor for the effect of the climate change. Most research on estimating snow cover area is binary: pixels are verified either "snow" or "not snow". Most pixels, however, are mixed with snow, vegetation, soil, rock or water.

Accuracy assessment and trend analysis of MODIS-derived data on snow-covered areas in the Sutlej basin, Western Himalayas

International Journal of Remote Sensing, 2015
Snow is important for hydrological studies and is a variable very sensitive to climatic variations. In the present study, the variability of snow-covered areas SCAs obtained through Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer MODIS snow data products was analysed using the Mann–Kendall test and Sen’s slope estimator in the Sutlej basin, Western ...

An application of MODIS data to snow cover monitoring in a pastoral area: A case study in Northern Xinjiang, China

Remote Sensing of Environment, 2008
Snow is an important land cover on the earth's surface. It is characterized by its changing nature. Monitoring snow cover extent plays a significant role in dynamic studies and prevention of snow-caused disasters in pastoral areas. Using NASA EOS Terra/MODIS snow cover products and in situ observation data during the four snow seasons from November 1 ...

Monitoring snow cover variability in an agropastoral area in the Trans Himalayan region of Nepal using MODIS data with improved cloud removal methodology

Remote Sensing of Environment, 2011
Abstract Monitoring the extent and pattern of snow cover in the dry, high altitude, Trans Himalayan region (THR) is significant to understand the local and regional impact of ongoing climate change and variability. The freely available Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) snow cover images, with 500 m spatial and daily temporal ...

Assessment of different topographic corrections in MODIS data for mapping effective snow covered areas in mountainous terrain

2009
Topography and its derivatives (altitude, slope and aspect) have an effect on satellite-measured radiances. For mountainous areas the sun zenith and azimuth angles, as well as direction of observation relative to these are more limiting factors. In this paper four topographic normalization methods were used to correct the reflectance values of medium ...
