Comparison of Three Different Random Forest Approaches to Retrieve Daily High-Resolution Snow Cover Maps from MODIS and Sentinel-2 in a Mountain Area, Gran Paradiso National Park (NW Alps)

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2023
In the Alpine environment, snow plays a key role in many processes involving ecosystems, biogeochemical cycles, and human wellbeing. Due to the inaccessibility of mountain areas and the high spatial and temporal heterogeneity of the snowpack, satellite spatio-temporal data without gaps offer a unique opportunity to monitor snow on a fine scale. In this

Changes of Potential Suitable Areas for Lynx Under Climate Change in Mohe Area, Daxing'anling Mountains, China

open access: yesWildlife Letters, EarlyView.
Climate change drives shifts in suitable habitats for Eurasian lynx and its prey (hare, roe deer) in Mohe, Daxing'anling Mountains. Under RCP scenarios, moderate warming (RCP4.5) promotes substantial habitat expansion, while high‐emission conditions (RCP8.5) lead to strong expansion in the 2050s but slower gains and partial contraction by the 2070s ...

A Comparison of Satellite-Derived Snow Maps with a Focus on Ephemeral Snow in North Carolina [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
In this paper, we focus on the attributes and limitations of four commonly-used daily snowcover products with respect to their ability to map ephemeral snow in central and eastern North Carolina.

Internal physiological drivers of leaf development in trees: Understanding the relationship between non‐structural carbohydrates and leaf phenology

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Plant phenology is crucial for understanding plant growth and climate feedback. It affects canopy structure, surface albedo, and carbon and water fluxes. While the influence of environmental factors on phenology is well‐documented, the role of plant intrinsic factors ...

Analysis of the consequences of climate change on the characteristics of middle Zagros snow cover using remote sensing data [PDF]

open access: yesتحقیقات کاربردی علوم جغرافیایی
Climate change is a significant environmental concern due to the sensitivity of glacier melting processes and snow density to climate variations. Currently, a range of satellite sensors, including AVHRR, MODIS, GEOS, and MERIS, are employed for snow ...

Application of radar polarimetry techniques for retrieval snow and rain characteristics in remote sensing [PDF]

open access: yesThe International Archives of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences, 2013
The presence of snow cover has significant impacts on the both global and regional climate and water balance on earth. The accurate estimation of snow cover area can be used for forecasting runoff due to snow melt and output of hydroelectric power.

Functional homogenization of terrestrial mammals outside protected areas in the Hengduan Mountains, China

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Despite the crucial role of human impacts on biodiversity loss, many assessments of this loss focus on single metrics, such as species richness, and overlook the multidimensional effects of human activities. Because of its importance to ecosystem functioning, we investigated the functional diversity of medium‐ and large‐sized mammal ...

Tree growth response and adaptation to climate change and climate extremes: From canopy to stem

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Plant Biology, EarlyView.
This review synthesizes the responses and adaptations of tree growth, including canopy phenology, intra‐annual wood formation dynamics, and annual stem growth, to climate change and climate extremes. It highlights key knowledge gaps for future research to support sustainable forest management and enhance forest carbon storage under ongoing climate ...

Measurement and modeling of diffuse ultraviolet radiation: A review

open access: yesPhotochemistry and Photobiology, EarlyView.
Solar UV radiation consists of direct and diffuse UV components. The diffuse component contributes to the exposure received by humans and to the risk of skin cancer and sun‐related eye disorders. This review aims to determine future research directions for the measurement and modeling of diffuse solar UV radiation.

Dual Polarimetric Radar Vegetation Index for monitoring forest moisture stress using time series of Sentinel‐1 SAR data

open access: yesPlant Biology, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates the potential of the Sentinel‐1 Dual Polarimetric Radar Vegetation Index, combined with climate variables and the Standardized Precipitation–Evapotranspiration Index, to effectively detect and monitor drought‐induced stress in temperate broadleaf deciduous forests.
