The Multilevel Modular DC Converter
IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, 2013The modular multilevel converter (M2C) has become an increasingly important topology in medium- and high-voltage applications. A limitation is that it relies on positive and negative half-cycles of the ac output voltage waveform to achieve charge balance on the submodule capacitors.

The delta configured modular multilevel converter
2016 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting (PESGM), 2016The modular multilevel converter (MMC) has become an attractive option for dc/ac conversion in many power system applications, in particular, for HVDC transmission. Due to its parallel arrangement of phase legs, the MMC is known to be a wye-configured architecture.

Capacitor selection for modular multilevel converter
2014 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE), 2014Submodule (SM) capacitor is a key component in a modular multilevel converter (MMC), the selection of which must consider the component’s specifications and the requirements of the targeted converter application. This paper focuses on the capacitor selection for MMCs in applications including high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission and static ...

Modular multilevel converter models for electromagnetic transients
2014 IEEE PES General Meeting | Conference & Exposition, 2014Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) may contain numerous IGBTs. The modeling of such converters for electromagnetic transient type (EMT-type) simulations is complex. Detailed models used in MMC-HVDC simulations may require very large computing times. Simplified and averaged models have been proposed in the past to overcome this problem.

Modular Multilevel Converter cell construction
2012 47th International Universities Power Engineering Conference (UPEC), 2012Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) is a promising technology for connecting to the grid distant offshore applications. This paper presents the considerations, the procedure and the challenges of the MMC's basic building block construction. The prototype is thoroughly tested and its results are discussed in this paper.

Submodule capacitor dimensioning for Modular Multilevel Converters
2012 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE), 2012This paper deals with the dimensioning of the capacitors in modular multilevel converters based on analytical equations. Considered design parameters are the (periodic) energy fluctuation, the admissible ripple voltage, and the demand in control reserve. Design examples complete this paper.

Voltage Sourced Converters (VSC) are being used in High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) power transmission to convert electrical power from AC to DC and vice versa and has the significant proportion of future DC transmission schemes. The converters have the ability to provide the connected AC networks with “clean” real and reactive power without the need
