The use of waste apple-wood as a source of sawdust to cultivate the mushrooms Pleurotus ostreatus and Lentinula edodes is a common practice, but it is imperative to ensure that the wood does not contain unsafe amounts of heavy-metals or pesticide ...

An isoform of 14‐3‐3 protein regulates transbilayer lipid movement at the plasma membrane
Loss of 14‐3‐3ζ in CHO cells confers resistance to exogenous phosphatidylserine (PS) and impairs endocytosis‐independent inward flip‐flop of fluorescent PS at the plasma membrane. RNAi‐mediated knockdown reproduces this defect, while no additive effect is seen in ATP11C‐deficient cells.

A numerical analysis, based on a novel physical quantity of the topology, is presented to specify the key flow leading into a vortex. This analysis traces the flow transition into a vortical flow in terms of local flow geometry (topology) specified by ...

Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

Biophysical approaches for studying viral entry
Viruses infect all living organisms and have been responsible for major epidemics and pandemics. Their ongoing evolutionary battle with host defenses creates a constant need for improved tools to study viral behavior. Advancing methods to probe viral attachment, fusion, and genome release deepen our understanding of how infections begin and support the

Development of CO2 Molecular Gate Membrane Module Systems for Pre-Combustion CO2 Capture
Research and development of novel CO2-selective membranes, called molecular gate membranes (MGMs), has been conducted. Unlike conventional CO2-selective membranes, MGMs show exceptionally high CO2 separation over H2.

We propose axioms for Kleene modules (KM). These structures have a Kleene algebra K and a Boolean algebra B as sorts. The scalar products are mappings K x B -> B; they arise as algebraic abstractions of relational image and preimage operations. KM is the basis of algebraic variants of dynamic logics.

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.
