Mohr-Coulomb Failure Criterion Expressed in Terms of Stress Invariants

A polynomial expression for the Mohr-Coulomb criterion for failure of brittle or frictional materials in terms of stress invariants is derived. The form of the polynomial expression corresponds to the pyramidal shape of the failure surface in principal stress space. This paper compares calculation results obtained with the Mohr-Coulomb and Drucker-Prager material models. The models are implemented in a finite element code and the exact models are used, i.e. no rounding of yield surface corners or apices is performed.
