A novel in-situ method to determine the respiratory tract deposition of carbonaceous particles reveals dangers of public commuting in highly polluted megacity

open access: yesParticle and Fibre Toxicology, 2022
Background Exposure to air pollutants is one of the major environmental health risks faced by populations globally. Information about inhaled particle deposition dose is crucial in establishing the dose–response function for assessing health-related ...

The formation of molecular clouds [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2001
In a recent paper, Elmegreen (2000) has made a cogent case, from an observational point of view, that the lifetimes of molecular clouds are comparable to their dynamical timescales. If so, this has important implications for the mechanisms by which molecular clouds form.

A Cloud-Scale View of the Molecular Gas Disk in the Whirlpool Galaxy and Beyond [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2022
The nearby galaxy M51 (also known as the Whirlpool galaxy) hosts an iconic grand-design spiral pattern and both IRAM facilities conducted the first cloud-scale (∼50 pc resolution) survey of the molecular gas reservoir across a the disk of a massive star ...

Fragmentation in molecular clouds [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1991
B209. Fragments are detected in the outer parts of the B209 molecular cloud in a region of density 1000 cm −3 using 12 CO, 13 CO, H 2 CO, IRAS 60 and 100

Biogenic, urban, and wildfire influences on the molecular composition of dissolved organic compounds in cloud water [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2017
Organic aerosol formation and transformation occurs within aqueous aerosol and cloud droplets, yet little is known about the composition of high molecular weight organic compounds in cloud water.

Molecular line signatures of cloud–cloud collisions [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2021
ABSTRACT Collisions between interstellar gas clouds are potentially an important mechanism for triggering star formation. This is because they are able to rapidly generate large masses of dense gas. Observationally, cloud collisions are often identified in position–velocity (PV) space through bridging features between intensity peaks ...

Multi-line characterization of whole molecular clouds using stratified random sampling [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2022
We have developed a new technique to characterize the multi-line emission from molecular clouds using statistical sampling. Our method uses available extinction maps to select a relatively small sample of cloud positions that cover the full range of ...

Molecular Abundances in the Sgr a Molecular Cloud [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1992
We have obtained column densities for HCO+, HCO, HCS+, C3H2, HC5N, SiO, OCS, HCOOH, CH3CH2 OH, and CH3CCH toward Sgr A. The fractional abundance of SiO relative to molecular hydrogen in Sgr A is comparable to that for the Orion plateau, ~ 10−7 − 10−8, which may be a typical value for hot clouds.

Triggering star formation: Experimental compression of a foam ball induced by Taylor–Sedov blast waves

open access: yesMatter and Radiation at Extremes, 2022
The interaction between a molecular cloud and an external agent (e.g., a supernova remnant, plasma jet, radiation, or another cloud) is a common phenomenon throughout the Universe and can significantly change the star formation rate within a galaxy. This

The LEGO Large Program: Constraining the Physics of Line Emission in Galaxy Observations [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2022
The IRAM Large Program LEGO studies molecular clouds in the Milky Way to constrain the physics controlling molecular line emission in galaxies. This is done by imaging two dozen clouds with setups that provide continuous spectral coverage of about 85–115
