Controlling the dynamics of molecular encapsulation and gating
Chem. Soc. Rev., 2011This critical review describes mechanisms by which guest molecules enter and depart molecular capsules. The discussion focuses on presenting gated molecular encapsulation, i.e., trapping and releasing of guest molecules at rates that are controlled by conformational changes in the host's structure. Developing quantitative rules that describe the gating

Electrostatic Gate Control in Molecular Transistors
Topics in Current Chemistry, 2018Molecular transistors, in which single molecules serve as active channel components in a three-terminal device geometry, constitute the building blocks of molecular scale electronic circuits. To demonstrate such devices, a gate electrode has been incorporated in several test beds of molecular electronics.

Molecular mechanisms of gated ion channels
Bioelectrochemistry and Bioenergetics, 1986Abstract Ion channels form the basis for intercellular communication in biological systems. With the advent of cloning techniques, it is now possible to sequence the proteins that form such channels. The acetylcholine receptor, for example, which consists of five subunits, and the voltage gated sodium channel have been completely sequenced by Noda et

The spinach plant aquaporin SoPIP2;1 is a gated water channel, which switches between open and closed states depending on the conformation of a 20-residue cytoplasmic loop, the D-loop. Using fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, we have investigated the possibility of driving the conformational equilibrium of the protein toward a ...

Molecular photonic logic gates
High Energy Chemistry, 2010The possibility of performing logical operations at the molecular level is being actively investigated at present with the aim of developing molecular logic gates, which can be used in information technologies. In this minireview, the design algorithm of molecular logic gates is considered and the requirements on molecular systems for use as logic ...

Molecular basis of K+ channel inactivation gating
1993The gating of many K+, Na+ and Ca++ channels is driven by changes in membrane potential. Part of the gating mechanism, the voltage sensing S4, a proposed transmembrane segment, has been identified. Movement in the membrane electric field of the charged S4 is thought to precede the opening and closing of the activation gate.

A photoactivated molecular gate
2016A novel capped silica nanoscopic mesoporous hybrid material for photo-driven cargo release applications has been designed and prepared. The capped system, which shows a zero release, contains a photo-cleavable bulky o-methoxybenzylamine derivative. Upon irradiation at 254 nm, photo-degradation of the o-methoxybenzylamine framework and the subsequent ...

Molecular Structure, Gating, and Regulation
2014Gating of ion channels is the opening response of the channel to a stimulus and its subsequent desensitization or inactivation. For nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, the stimulus is the binding of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine to an extracellular domain followed by a sequence of conformational changes resulting in rapid channel opening.
