Molecular identification and phylogenetic analysis of baculoviruses from Lepidoptera

open access: yesVirology, 2006
PCR amplification of the highly conserved baculovirus genes late expression factor 8 (lef-8), late expression factor 9 (lef-9) and polyhedrin/granulin (polh/gran) combined with molecular phylogenetic analyses provide a powerful tool to identify lepidopteran-specific baculoviruses and to study their diversity.

Phylogenetic relationships of Cryptosporidium parasites based on the 70- kilodalton heat shock protein (HSP70) gene [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
We have characterized the nucleotide sequences of the 70-kDa heat shock protein (HSP70) genes of Cryptosporidium baileyi, C. felis, C. meleagridis, C. muris, C. serpentis, C. wrairi, and C. parvum from various animals.

Melanin's Role in Balancing Mechanical Strength and Reproductive Output in Environmentally Stressed Fungal Spores

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Melanin content directly controls fungal spore mechanical properties, with pigmented spores achieving rupture forces two orders of magnitude higher than hyaline spores. Environmental stress drives this quantity‐quality tradeoff; stressed species invest energy in melanin‐reinforced, mechanically superior thick‐walled, super‐hydrophobic spores, while ...

The Invasive Nearctic Pest Platynota stultana Walsingham (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Is Established in Southern Italy

open access: yesInsects
Platynota stultana is a Nearctic moth of economic importance for many crops in North America. It is a quarantine pest in Europe, where Mediterranean regions, with warm climates similar to those of the moth’s native range, are at risk of invasion. To date,

Chemical Screening Identifies Danofloxacin as a Self‐Renewal Agonist of Embryonic Stem Cells through Alleviation of HDAC1‐Mediated Deacetylation of Tert and Prdm10

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study identified Danofloxacin as a novel supporter of the maintenance of mouse embryonic stem cell (ESC) pluripotency. It functions partially by inhibiting HDAC1, which increases specific histone acetylation marks and activates key genes like Tert and Prdm10.

Two Cases of Chromomycosis Identified by Molecular Phylogenetic Analysis

open access: yesMedical Mycology Journal, 2016
Chromomycosis is an infection caused by dematiaceous fungi. These fungi belong to several genera with varied clinical presentations and parasitic forms. The disease is roughly classified into three types: chromoblastomycosis, black-grain mycetoma, and phaeohyphomycosis.

A Pentaradial and Bilateral Combined Photoreception System in the Sea Cucumber is Mediated by a Blue Light‐Sensitive R‐Opsin

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The sea cucumber Holothuria leucospilota detects blue and adjacent wavelengths of light via an r‐opsin with a maximum absorption at 459 nm. In the oral tentacles, papillae, and tube feet, distinct light‐sensing structures with specialized morphologies are formed, constituting a unique pentaradial and bilateral combined photoreception system.

Molecular detection and phylogenetic analysis of Kenyan human bocavirus isolates

open access: yesJournal of Infection in Developing Countries, 2014
Introduction: The commonly expected causative agents associated with flu-like symptoms in Kenya are the classical viral pathogens identifiable as influenza virus, adenovirus, parainfluenza virus, enteroviruses, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and ...

Gonadotropin‐Inhibitory Hormone (GnIH) and Its Receptor GPR147 Mediates Acute Stress‐Induced Activation of the Locus Coeruleus‐SAM Axis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Gonadotropin‐inhibitory hormone (GnIH, also known as RFamide‐related peptide‐3, RFRP‐3) is a hypothalamic neuropeptide that regulates vertebrate reproduction via its receptor GPR147. Although GnIH is known to mediate stress‐induced reproductive suppression, its role in broader stress responses remains unclear.

PHYLOGENETIC ANALYSIS OF BACTERIAL COMMUNITIES IN PANCURAN 7 BATURRADEN HOT SPRING [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The diversity of the bacterial communities supported by culturing and capturing through 0.2 m-pore-size filter was studied. The Pancuran 7 hot spring has temperature at around 52°C and pH 7.
