Molluscum contagiosum is a benign skin tumour, caused by a poxvirus, that affects mostly children and young adults. It is a common, self-limiting viral disease of the skin and mucous membranes. Lz Initial descriptions of the lesion date from 1814, when it was defined as a separate entity to neurofibromatosis (molluscum fibrosum).

In this article, the natural history of molluscum contagiosum is described by various authorities covering the last 200 years. Molluscum contagiosum may present a therapeutic challenge, but clinical methods of treatment are described. Molluscum contagiosum should alert the clinician to the possibility of HIV infection. Molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV) is a poxvirus that causes benign skin tumours in man, consisting of a localized mass of hypertrophied and hyperplastic epidermis due to enhanced basal cell division. The disease was first described in 1814 (Bateman, 1814).

Follicular molluscum contagiosum
British Journal of Dermatology, 1985Four cases are reported in which atypical molluscum contagiosum lesions were found, arising from follicular epithelium. All the patients were adults and two had a history of atopic dermatitis. Histology showed intradermal nodules containing typical molluscum cells but lacking normal direct communication to the skin surface.

Clinical diagnosis of molluscum contagiosum has been considered easy by most dermatology textbooks. The semiglobular, elevated, firm, and yellow, waxy-appearing lesions with central umbilication from which a milky curdlike substance can be expressed are described as characteristic features.
