Ethology, Volume 130, Issue 9, September 2024.Egg retrieval is an ancient behaviour displayed by birds in which a displaced egg is transferred back into the nest. Egg rejection, in contrast, is a recently evolved adaptation by hosts of brood parasites in which an egg is removed from a nest. Prothonotary warblers retrieved their own eggs and brown‐headed cowbird eggs at the same frequency.
