Interaction of MgO Recyclate‐Based Cermet Anode With KF‐AlF3‐Al2O3 at 800°C During Laboratory Scale Aluminum Molten Salt Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A carbon‐free, as‐sintered MgO–steel cermet anode, fabricated via cold isostatic pressing using MgO–C refractory recyclate, was evaluated under laboratory‐scale K‐cryolite electrolysis at 800°C. Operation at this reduced temperature, combined with the electrolyte's limited electrical conductivity, led to an increase in cell voltage.

Predicting and understanding corrosion in molten chloride salts

open access: yesMRS Advances, 2023
AbstractMolten chloride salts are stable at higher temperatures than many other salts, including nitrate salts, and are thus promising for heat transfer and/or thermal energy storage in concentrating solar power, nuclear power, and other thermal energy storage applications.

Impact of Pre‐Oxidation Treatments on a Recycled MgO/Steel‐Composite as Carbon Free Anode in Aluminum‐Electrolysis Environments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Cermets (60 vol.% AISI 316L stainless steel, 40 vol.% recycled MgO), intended for use in aluminum electrolysis, were pre‐oxidized in three furnaces with different heating technologies and subjected to a cryolite corrosion test. The different atmospheres influenced the formation of oxide layers, which in turn affected corrosion resistance and ...
