The Effects of Negative Heel Rocker Shoes on the Moment and the Contact Forces Applied on Lower Limb Joints of Diabetic Patients During Walking

open access: yesPhysical Treatments, 2016
Purpose: The negative heel rocker shoes help reduce the plantar pressure in patients with diabetes, but their effects on the other lower limb joints are unknown.

Enhanced Force Systems for Efficient Maxillary Anterior Diastema Closure Using Clear Aligners: Evaluation of Attachments and Enhanced Structural Modifications

open access: yesApplied Sciences
This study evaluates the biomechanical efficacy of clear aligners in closing anterior maxillary diastemas using enhanced force systems. While clear aligners offer esthetic and functional benefits, their predictability in controlling bodily movement and ...

Exploring health navigating design: momentary contentment in a cancer context

open access: yesInternational Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health & Well-Being, 2017
Purpose: The technocratic and medicalized model of healthcare is rarely optimal for patients. By connecting two different studies we explore the possibilities of increasing quality of life in cancer care.

Inhibiting stearoyl‐CoA desaturase suppresses bone metastatic prostate cancer by modulating cellular stress, mTOR signaling, and DNA damage response

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.

Research on the new process of separating hollow work-piece by eccentric torsion cutting for stamping [PDF]

open access: yesFME Transactions
This work aims to conduct theoretical and experimental studies on the energy and force parameters of the separation process, as well as the geometric accuracy of the separated tubular workpiece using the "eccentric twisting" method.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Analysis of the Forces and Moments in Canine Bodily Movement with Different Clear Aligners’ Extraction Space Designs

open access: yesApplied Sciences
This study aimed to optimize space closure efficiency by comparing the forces and moments exerted by different designs of clear aligners (CAs) during the movement of maxillary canines into the premolar extraction space.
