People differ from each other in how they perceive their current finances, the state of their financial futures, and their attitudes toward money. We show in this chapter that one can easily measure these attitudes using broad surveys. We also show, however, that we need to go deeper than just measuring attitudes.

Financial distress and money attitudes. [PDF]
This study was concerned with the construction and validation of a Financial Distress Index (FDI). A stratified (UK) sample of 2000 adults completed the new measure as well as measures of financial anxiety, general stress and money attitudes. The FDI correlated highly with general stress and financial anxiety, establishing concurrent validity.
