Monocentric Versus Polycentric Models in Urban Economics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
This article overviews the development of the formal modelling framework for the urban spatial structure which started in 1960s and grew dramatically thereafter. Modelling in the 1970s focused on the endogenous formation of the central business district within a city.

The monocentric model and after [PDF]

open access: possibleRecherches économiques de Louvain, 1998
SummaryVon Thünen's monocentric model is considered as one of the foundations of spatial economics. Most of its assumptions have been transfered from agricultural to urban space by New Urban Economics. This transposition gave new impetus both to the monocentric model and to urban economics.

The Panexponential Monocentric Model

Journal of Urban Economics, 2000
Abstract We derive declining exponential rent and density functions for a monocentric city from a new set of assumptions, which place restrictions on commuting costs rather than on the demand for land. The utility function is Cobb–Douglas with unrestricted income expenditure shares for land and for the numeraire good.

Apartment Rents: Another Challenge to the Monocentric Model

Geographical Analysis, 1993
Extension of hedonic modeling strategy to the case of apartment rents in the Dallas region reveals the influence of a complex network of activity centers and highway axes. Nodes other than the CBD exert greater influence on rents than the CBD and amenity variables and externalities have both positive and negative effects.

Can machine learning models support physicians in systemic lupus erythematosus diagnosis? Results from a monocentric cohort

Joint Bone Spine, 2022
Background: Several cardiovascular (CV) risk algorithms are available to predict CV events in the general population. However, their performance in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) might differ from the general population. This cross-sectional multicentre study aimed to estimate the 10-year CV risk using two different algorithms in a large RA ...

Testing the Monocentric Urban Model: Evidence Based on Wasteful Commuting

Real Estate Economics, 1991
Recent papers have questioned the ability of the monocentric urban model to account for urban development patterns. Most damaging are estimates of wasteful commuting that indicate actual commuting may be eight times as large as efficient commuting predicted by the strong form of the monocentric model.
