An investigation into the effect of scour on the natural frequency of an offshore wind turbine [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Rapid expansion of the offshore wind industry has stimulated a renewed interest in the behaviour of offshore piles. There is widespread acceptance in practice that pile design methods developed for the offshore oil and gas industry may not be appropriate

Monopile Implementation in Offshore Bridge

open access: yesInternational Journal For Multidisciplinary Research
This paper presents an in-depth analysis of the implementation of monopiles in offshore and overwater bridge construction. Monopiles, cylindrical steel structures driven into the seabed or riverbed, have gained prominence as a foundation solution due to their cost-effectiveness, ease of installation, and environmental benefits.

Assessment of the Distribution of the Gaps Between Ring Flange Connections in Offshore Wind Turbines

open access: yesce/papers, Volume 8, Issue 3-4, Page 289-297, September 2025.
Abstract Ring flange connections are commonly used to connect the tower of offshore wind turbines with monopile foundations. Studs in these ring flange connections are sensitive to fatigue damage accumulation, which is aggravated by gaps between the flanges. Such gaps are inevitable because of imperfections (out‐of‐flatness) of the flanges.

Dynamic Analysis of a Monopile Supported Offshore Wind Turbine [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the 5th International Congress on Computational Mechanics and Simulation, 2014
This paper describes the stochastic dynamic response of National Renewable Energy Laboratory 5 MW offshore fixed-based wind turbine (OWT) under various soil conditions – medium dense sand, stiff clay and layered profiles in 20 m depth of water. The aerodynamic and hydrodynamic OWT loads are derived using the force-controlled approach.

Cost Development and Cost Drivers in UK Offshore Wind Farms

open access: yesWind Energy, Volume 28, Issue 9, September 2025.
ABSTRACT The offshore wind industry faces challenges of impairments, project abandonment, and no bids in auction rounds, following several years of cost increases and project delays. Both industry and government rely on cost reductions. Companies struggle with low business‐economic profitability, and taxpayers require a justification for government ...

Effect of ordering of cyclic loading sequences on the short-term performance of offshore monopiles in an overconsolidated clay

open access: yesApplied Ocean Research
Wind and wave actions that vary in amplitude, frequency and direction cause irregular cyclic loading on monopiles supporting offshore wind turbines (OWTs), resulting in cumulative deformation.

Closed form solution of Eigen frequency of monopile supported offshore wind turbines in deeper waters incorporating stiffness of substructure and SSI [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Offshore wind turbines (OWTs) are dynamically loaded structures and therefore the estimation of the natural frequency is an important design calculation to avoid resonance and resonance related effects (such as fatigue).

MONITORING MONOPILE PENETRATION THROUGH MAGNETIC STRAY FIELD MEASUREMENTS

open access: yesProceedings of the XI International Conference on Structural Dynamics, 2020
Current methods to infer the penetration of a steel monopile during an offshore installation are rather inaccurate. Since a large number of foundation piles will be installed offshore in the coming years, a reliable technique to infer the penetration depth is vital.

Submerged Arc Welding of S355G10+M Steel: Analyzing Strength, Distortion, Residual Stresses, and Fatigue for Offshore Wind Applications

open access: yesFatigue &Fracture of Engineering Materials &Structures, Volume 48, Issue 9, Page 3859-3878, September 2025.
ABSTRACT This research delves into the material performance of submerged arc‐welded S355G10 +M structural steel for offshore wind turbines, with an emphasis on strength, ductility, hardness, distortion, residual stress, and fatigue. This was done by conducting experiments and employing modeling tools combined with image analysis.

Numerical analysis of offshore monopile foundations in layered clay

open access: yesApplied Ocean Research
Monopiles are often embedded in layered soil profiles, where stratification significantly influences their lateral load response. However, much of the existing literature and proposed methodologies predominately focus on uniform soil profiles which is ...
