Abstract Etymologically mono+ theism implies belief in or worship of a single deity. But belief in a single deity is at most a necessary condition for monotheism. A religion that recognized Zeus as the only deity would not be considered monotheistic even if its adherents insisted that besides him, there are no other gods.
