Tribology of ZrC Coatings and Spherical Tips Acquired with Extraordinarily Stiff, Metal Atomic Force Microscopy Probes

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
In this research, ZrC coatings are evaluated against various counterprobes at the microscale using novel super‐stiff atomic force microscopy cantilevers. The chemical composition of the coating is shown to be an important factor influencing coating hardness and Young's modulus, while surface roughness, counterprobe hardness, and surface energy are the ...

Monotonicity, convexity and inequalities involving zero-balanced Gaussian hypergeometric function

open access: yesAIMS Mathematics, 2022
We generalize several monotonicity and convexity properties as well as sharp inequalities for the complete elliptic integrals to the zero-balanced Gaussian hypergeometric function F(a,b;a+b;x).

Monotone Strategyproofness [PDF]

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2013
We propose a way to compare the extent of preference misrepresentation between two strategies. We define a mechanism to be monotone strategyproof when declaring a "more truthful" preference ordering in the mechanism dominates - with respect to the true preferences - declaring a less truthful preference ordering.

A Simulative Approach for the Prediction of Mesoscale Residual Stress Fields in Solution‐Strengthened Ferritic Ductile Iron

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents a 3D representative volume element‐based simulation approach to predict mesoscopic residual stress and strain fields in silicon solid solution‐strengthened ductile cast iron. By modeling phase transformation kinetics with an enhanced Johnson–Mehl–Avrami–Kolmogorov model, the effects of varying cooling rates on residual stresses are ...

Strict monotonicity properties in one-dimensional excited random walks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We consider one-dimensional excited random walks with finitely many cookies at each site. There are certain natural monotonicity results that are known for the excited random walk under some partial orderings of the cookie environments.

Residual Stress States in Microstructurally Graded PBF–LB/M Austenitic Steel Components

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study examines microstructurally graded 316L rectangular tube profiles fabricated via PBF–LB/M using a dual‐laser system. A 1 kW top‐hat and a 400 W Gaussian laser create distinct grain sizes and crystallographic texture. Mechanical properties are linked to microstructural evolution driven by processing conditions.

On Monotone Persuasion

open access: yesProceedings of the 26th ACM Conference on Economics and Computation
We study monotone persuasion in the linear case, where posterior distributions over states are summarized by their mean. We solve the two leading cases where optimal unrestricted signals can be nonmonotone. First, if the objective is s-shaped and the state is discrete, then optimal monotone signals are upper censorship, whereas optimal unrestricted ...

Monotone normality

open access: yesTopology and its Applications, 1992
The bulk of this paper is devoted to a proof of the following remarkable theorem: Every open cover \(\mathcal U\) of a monotonically normal space \(X\) has a \(\sigma\)-disjoint open partial refinement \(\mathcal V\) such that \(X\backslash\bigcup{\mathcal V}\) is the union of a discrete family of stationary subsets of regular uncountable cardinals ...

Rooted Uniform Monotone Minimum Spanning Trees

open access: yes, 2017
We study the construction of the minimum cost spanning geometric graph of a given rooted point set $P$ where each point of $P$ is connected to the root by a path that satisfies a given property.

On the Deformation Behavior of Metastable CrMnNi Steels Processed by Directed Energy Deposition in Different Temperature Regimes

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
In the present study, metastable CrMnNi steels with varying chemical compositions and a concomitantly altered stacking fault energy are processed via directed energy deposition and afterwards tested via tensile tests at different temperatures. The present study shows the influence of the manufacturing process on the elemental deformation mechanisms for
