The Hairies: Cleverman (Griffen, 2016-2017)

open access: yes, 2020
In this chapter, I attend Halberstam's notion that the traces or scars of old Monsters live on in contemporary examples and also move into the future, by analysing Hairies in the Australian two season series Cleverman (Griffen, 2016-2017) and ...

Why monsters are dangerous

open access: yes, 2023
Monsters and other imaginary animals have been conjured up by a wide range of cultures. Can their popularity be explained, and can their properties be predicted?

Flexoelectricity in Photoconversion: Fundamentals, Materials, and Outlooks

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Mechanical bending of a flexible cantilever induces a strain gradient in the photoactive material. The resulting flexoelectric field couples with photovoltaic and photoconductive effects, modulating charge generation, separation, and collection. A comparative analysis of oxide perovskites, halide perovskites, and two‐dimensional materials is presented,

Colossal Photovoltaic Current in Ferroelectric Oxide by Constructing Defect Band

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Colossal photovoltaic current density of 34.36 mA/cm2 under 375 nm illumination has been achieved in the Pb‐deficient PbTiO3 film. The ultraviolet photoresponsivity surpasses that of all reported ferroelectric materials. This enhancement is attributed to the junction effect between the Pb‐deficient and non‐defective layers.

Monstrous animal siblings in Europe

open access: yesBoletín de Literatura Oral, 2022
Reports of women giving birth to a baby together with an animal (toad, mouse, bird, etc.), are documented in Europe from the 1100s onwards: the most important traditions of which are the frater Salernitanorum and the sooterkin. Throughout the centuries,

Field‐Frustrated Cooperative Distortions: Suppressing Jahn‐Teller Ordering via Microwave Annealing

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Microwave annealing decouples local Jahn‐Teller distortions from long‐range cooperative ordering in CuFe2O4, stabilizing a metastable cubic phase that remains locally distorted yet globally symmetry‐frustrated. Synchrotron XRD, PDF, XPS, and in situ thermal cycling reveal how non‐equilibrium MW‐phonon interactions suppress cooperative orbital‐lattice ...

Thinking with Monsters

open access: yes, 2018
Optimistic instrumentalism dominates the narratives and discourse(s) that attend recent technology advances. Most future-studies methods in current use depend on projecting properties, processes, facts or conditions of the present into the future. Absent is substantive engagement with the human condition and day-to-day life such technological futures ...

Multiferroic‐Centric Materials and Systems Engineering for Battery Applications: An Insight Into Mechanisms, Strategies, and Characterizations

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Multiferroic order parameters – polarization, magnetization, and ferroelastic strain – are positioned as dynamic design variables for batteries. Their mechanistic roles, practical tuning through fabrication and external fields, and ferroic‐resolved characterization routes are unified into a closed‐loop framework, revealing how coupled ferroic responses

Emergent Spin Fluctuation and Structural Metastability in Self‐Intercalated Cr1+xTe2${\rm Cr}_{1+x}{\rm Te}_2$ Compounds

open access: yesAdvanced Electronic Materials, EarlyView.
Metastable superstructure and emergent spin fluctuation in self‐intercalated Cr1+xTe2${\rm Cr}_{1+x}{\rm Te}_2$ ABSTRACT Intercalated van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials host unique magnetic properties due to the interplay of competing interlayer and intralayer exchange couplings, which depend on the intercalant concentration within the van der ...

Computing in the Monster

open access: yesJournal of Symbolic Computation, 2001
The author speculates on various possible methods of computing in the Monster sporadic simple group. The huge size of this group makes this a hard problem, but it seems clear that any efficient system must make use of fast computation in one or more (large) subgroups. Explicit descriptions of several such subgroups are given, together with some results
