High-Resolution Electron Microscopy of Montmorillonite and Montmorillonite/Epoxy Nanocomposites

The Journal of Physical Chemistry B, 2005
With the use of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy the structure and morphology of montmorillonite (MMT), a material of current interest for use in polymer nanocomposites, was characterized. Using both imaging theory and experiment, the procedures needed to generate lattice images from MMT were established.

MONTMORILLONITE-POLYALCOHOL COMPLEXES

Clays and clay minerals (National Conference on Clays and Clay Minerals), 1960
AbstractSome montmorillonites may be differentiated by complexing them with polyalcohols having a CH2 group that is not connected to an oxygen atom. Montmorillonites with a low layer charge and high valence interlayer cations have larger basal spacings for their complexes than do those with a high layer charge and low valence interlayer cations.

Effect of silane functionalization of montmorillonite on epoxy/montmorillonite nanocomposite

Polymer Bulletin, 2009
Mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties of various montmorillonite (MMT)/epoxy nanocomposites were investigated. 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane functionalized MMT was compared with commercial pristine MMT and ammonium salt substituted MMT. Qualitative evidence of silane functionalization was confirmed by FT-IR.

The Nucleating Effect of Montmorillonite on Crystallization of PET/Montmorillonite Nanocomposite

Journal of Polymer Research, 2003
Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites were prepared by solution intercalation method. The clay was organo-modified with intercalation agent of cetyltrimetylammonium chloride (CMC). XRD showed that the layers of MMT were intercalated by CMC.

DIMEPIPERATE ADSORPTION AND HYDROLYSIS ON AL3+-MONTMORILLONITE, FE3+-MONTMORILLONITE, CA2+-MONTMORILLONITE, AND NA+-MONTMORILLONITE

1993
The adsorption of the herbicide dimepiperate S-(alpha,alpha-dimethylbenzyl)-1-piperidinecarbothioate on homoionic Fe3+-, Al3+-, Ca2+-, and Na+-montmorillonite was studied in aqueous medium. The adsorption is described well by the Freundlich equation. The adsorption capacity decreases in the order Fe3+ > Al3+ > Ca2+ > Na+ clay.

The Limited Swelling of Montmorillonite

Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 1998
The attraction forces responsible for the occurrence of limited swelling of montmorillonite having divalent counterions were evaluated from (a) the electrostatic attraction between the negative charges of one surface and the effective charges of the counterions of the other interlayer surface and (b) van der Waals attraction between the two interlayer ...

Catalysis by montmorillonites

Clay Minerals, 1983
AbstractA preliminary set of ‘rules’ for acid-catalysis by ion-exchanged montmorillonites has been derived from the reaction of alkenes, alcohols and alicyclic acids over such catalysts. It has been shown that: 1. Cr(III) and Fe(III) are the most active interlayer cations.

From used montmorillonite to carbon monolayer–montmorillonite nanocomposites

Applied Clay Science, 2014
Abstract Summary background Montmorillonite (Mt) as a low-cost and high-efficient adsorbent for cationic dyes has a promising application in dye wastewater treatment. However, proper disposal of the used Mt is critical to its application. Objective In this work, the used Mt after the adsorption of crystal violet (CV) was calcined under the ...

Acid-base chemistry of montmorillonitic and beidellitic-montmorillonitic smectite

Russian Journal of Electrochemistry, 2007
Suspension of a Tunisian purified smectite and American montmorillonite are studied by acid-base potentiometric and mass titrations. These experimental methods are used to determine the point of zero net proton charge (PZNPC). A very good agreement is observed between the two kinds of experiments.

Polyethylene-montmorillonite nanocomposites. [PDF]

open access: possible, 2008
Nanocomposite materials are currently attracting much interest due to their possibility of global property improvement – mechanical strength, toughness, electrical breakdown strength, electrical erosion resistance and flame retardancy. In order to disperse montmorillonite clay (MMT) into polyethylene(PE), the clay sheets need to be rendered ...
