Exploring the potential of using male‐killing endosymbionts to induce female‐biased insect populations for enhanced biomass production

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Overview of the mindset and long‐term goals with the approach suggested in this study. We provide a first proof of concept that male‐killing endosymbionts can be used to establish female biased populations with higher production efficiency than populations with a 50/50 sex ratio. This biological tool can have marked positive impact on future commercial

Toronto's drug policy paradox: Harm reduction sites and drug police occurrences in Toronto neighborhoods (1992–2020)

open access: yesCriminology, EarlyView.
Abstract Discourse around drug policy presents a stark contrast between policing and harm reduction models, sparking debates on the state's regulatory versus protective role. Canada is an ideal case to study drug policy models due to its global recognition as a leader in harm reduction alongside continued reliance on policing of drugs.

A Tale of Appendages: Investigating Limb and Tail Variation in Salamanders

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
We analyzed limb and tail proportions in 44% of known salamander species using a phylogenetic comparative approach. Our results revealed significant variation among families and ecological groups, with aquatic species showing longer limbs and basal lineages having shorter tails.

BirdNET: Automated Detection for Monitoring Critically Endangered Lemurs from the Maromizaha Forest

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of integrating PAM with BirdNET, a convolutional neural network originally developed for avian vocalization detection, to monitor two critically endangered lemurs, Indri indri and Varecia variegata, in Madagascar's Maromizaha rainforest.

Multi‐Omics Analysis Reveals Coordinated Adaptations in Genes, Metabolism, and Gut Microbiota Underpinning Herbivory in Lordiphosa Flies

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Multi‐omics analysis reveals that herbivorous adaptation in Lordiphosa flies arises from coordinated interactions across the genome, transcriptome, and gut microbiota: genomic expansions of detoxification (e.g., cytochrome P450s) and carbohydrate metabolism gene families, transcriptomic upregulation of energy pathways like lipid oxidation and ...
