On some properties of the Moran index
The Moran index which is often used to detect spatial autocorrelation among geographical data in the main focus of this paper. In this article, we will derive exact and simple expression for the corresponding moments when the vector of observations is from a multivariate exchangeable population.

Practical limits of Moran’s autocorrelation index for raster class maps
Computers, Environment and Urban Systems, 2007Abstract This paper is concerned with the calculation of the Moran index of spatial contiguity, also known as Moran’s I, on binary raster maps. While the theoretical range of I extends from roughly −1 to 1 for a raster map, in practice possible I values are much more restricted.

Categorization of hierarchically partitioned waterbody-spread via Moran's index
2017 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), 2017We show an application of Moran's Index to process and analyze the waterbody-spread extracted from remotely sensed data. A method that is employed to quantify division-wise waterbody-spread, district-wise waterbody-spread and taluk-wise waterbody-spread spatial complexity is based on Moran's Index computation.

Moran’s Index-Based Tensor Decomposition for Eddy Current Pulsed Thermography Sequence Processing
IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement, 2021Eddy current pulsed thermography (ECPT) is widely used in the nondestructive testing (NDT) of metal surface defects. Because defect information is sometimes affected by the edge effect, it is necessary to segment the ECPT image sequence, that is, separate the defected part from the background, to improve the detection effect.

This paper analyzes the application of Moran’s index and Geary’s coefficient to the characterization of lung nodules as malignant or benign in computerized tomography images. The characterization method is based on a process that verifies which combination of measures, from the proposed measures, has been best able to discriminate between the benign ...

Spatial autocorrelation (SA), describing correlation of a particular feature/phenomenon with itself across space, is one of the major properties of any spatial data. Among the various measures of SA proposed till date, the Moran's index (I) is the most common as well as significant one.
