Crowdsourced correlation clustering with relative distance comparisons

open access: yes, 2017
Crowdsourced, or human computation based clustering algorithms usually rely on relative distance comparisons, as these are easier to elicit from human workers than absolute distance information.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Designing participatory urban interventions for biodiversity and ecosystem resilience through the POL AI framework

open access: yesDiscover Sustainability
The research by design project focuses on developing more-than-human urban environment adaptations. The project employs prototypes built from responsive wood panels that respond to different microclimatic conditions, thus supporting the diversity of ...

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Removal of endocrine disrupting chemicals using low pressure reverse osmosis membrane [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are one of the major focuses of contaminants in current environmental issues, as they can cause adverse health effects on animals and human, particularly to endocrine function.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Designing more-than-human thermal comfort: bio-inspired evaporative cooling in porous facade components for cavity-nesting wild bees

open access: yesFrontiers in Built Environment
Urban surfaces such as Facades and rooftops are critical mediators of microclimatic conditions in cities, influencing the thermal comfort of both human and non-human inhabitants.

Issues on combining human and non-human intelligence [PDF]

open access: yes
The purpose here is to call attention to some of the issues confronting the designer of a system that combines human and non-human intelligence. We do not know how to design a non-human intelligence in such a way that it will fit naturally into a human ...
