Soil Properties and Plant Species Identity Independently Influence Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungal Composition Across Lowland Tropical Forests

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 58, Issue 2, March 2026.
We found that plant species identity and soil properties, especially soil phosphorus availability, independently structured arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) community composition in tropical forests across central Panama. We also found that soil nutrient availability may mediate the interaction networks between plants and AMF. ABSTRACT Plant species

open access: yesActa Scientiarum. Agronomy, 2008

Drivers of plant phenolic concentration across global drylands

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 1, January 2026.
This study advances the understanding of how biotic and abiotic stressors shape plant defence strategies in global drylands. The findings shed novel insights about how plant secondary metabolites and their associated functions shift in response to changes in climate and grazing pressure, two key global change drivers with significant implications for ...

Phylogenomics‐based click‐beetle classification tackles multiple origins of phenotypic modifications

open access: yesSystematic Entomology, Volume 51, Issue 1, January‐March 2026.
Using a concatenated dataset consisting of new genomic data from 73 species across 40 click‐beetle tribes and an earlier published, smaller dataset, we conducted the first 4200‐ortholog study targeting the phylogeny of Elateridae with the highest resolution to date.

Constrained variation in the internal architecture of avian wing bones

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 12, Page 3611-3627, December 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Extant birds exhibit remarkable ecological disparity accompanied by widespread skeletal convergence driven by functional adaptation. Investigations of morphofunctional associations with ecological factors have frequently focused on the external morphology of avian wing ...

Trait coordination reveals the fast–slow plant economics spectrum along the vertical canopy profile in central Amazonian forests

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 12, Page 3596-3610, December 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Understanding how environmental drivers affect tree functioning is essential to improve predictions of tropical forests' response to climate change. While functional traits directly influence tree performance, our understanding of how canopy environments shape their ...
