Pronounced hyperostosis frontalis interna and co‐occurring lesions in the skull base suggestive of a pituitary tumor in a woman from medieval Germany

open access: yesInternational Journal of Osteoarchaeology, Volume 33, Issue 6, Page 1095-1100, November/December 2023., 2023
Abstract Hyperostosis frontalis interna (HFI) is an osseous overgrowth characterized by symmetrical, irregular bone apposition on the internal table of the frontal bone, which preferentially occurs in females. In 1719, Morgagni described the condition as one sign of a triad comprising HFI, hirsutism, and obesity (Morgagni's syndrome).

Bochdalek hernia presenting as recurrent fever and bicytopenia in a pediatric patient: A rare case report

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 11, Issue 10, October 2023., 2023
Chest X‐ray capturing the distinctive features of a Bochdalek hernia in a pediatric patient. The radiograph vividly showcases the diaphragmatic herniation and consequential shift in mediastinal structures. Bochdalek hernia, a rare condition, involves the displacement of abdominal contents into the thoracic cavity.

A novel in vivo approach to assess strains of the human abdominal wall under known intraabdominal pressure [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the Mechanical Behavior of Biomedical Materials, 125 (2022) 104902, 2021
The study concerns mechanical behaviour of a living human abdominal wall. A better mechanical understanding of a human abdominal wall and recognition of its material properties is required to find mechanically compatible surgical meshes to significantly improve the treatment of ventral hernias.

Laparoscopic Mesh Repair Of Diaphragmatic Morgagni Hernia

open access: yesInternational Journal For Multidisciplinary Research, 2023
Diaphragmatic hernias of Morgagni were first described in 1769 as anatomical defects in the anterior diaphragm that allow herniation of abdominal viscera into the thorax by Giovanni Battista Morgagni, an Italian anatomist and pathologist.

Full-field in vivo experimental study of the strains of a breathing human abdominal wall with intra-abdominal pressure variation [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the Mechanical Behavior of Biomedical Materials, Volume 147, November 2023, 106148, 2023
The presented study aims to assess the mechanical behaviour of the anterior abdominal wall based on an in vivo experiment on humans. Full-field measurement of abdominal wall displacement during changes of intra-abdominal pressure is performed using a digital image correlation (DIC) system.

Three Centuries of Appendicectomy

open access: yesWorld Journal of Surgery, Volume 47, Issue 4, Page 928-936, April 2023., 2023
Abstract Background Save for the contribution of Charles McBurney, who described his eponymous point and the appendicectomy incision, the history of appendicectomy is largely unknown among the medical profession. This review traces the history from the first anatomical depiction of the appendix to the development of open appendicectomy and the recent ...

The role of the University of Padua medical school in the study of conjoined twins between 18th and early 19th century

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Medical Genetics Part A, Volume 188, Issue 12, Page 3423-3431, December 2022., 2022
Abstract The Medical School of Padua (Italy) contributed profoundly to the study of teratology. Many famous physicians and professors of medicine, such as Liceti, Vallisneri, Morgagni, and Malacarne, have studied and investigated these anomalies to better understand the causes and to find a potential explanation, often preserving the specimens for ...
