Bounded Littlewood identity related to alternating sign matrices

open access: yesForum of Mathematics, Sigma
An identity that is reminiscent of the Littlewood identity plays a fundamental role in recent proofs of the facts that alternating sign triangles are equinumerous with totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions and that alternating sign ...

Fatal lightning strikes in Ireland from newspaper records 1900–2024

open access: yesWeather, EarlyView.
This study presents a chronology of fatal lightning strikes in Ireland (1900–2024) derived from digitised newspaper archives. Analysis provides insights into the seasonality, location, victim activity and synoptic conditions (from Lamb weather types) of 94 fatal events causing 113 deaths.

Beyond superfluidity in non-equilibrium Bose–Einstein condensates

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2017
The phenomenon of superfluidity in open Bose–Einstein condensates (BEC) is analysed numerically and analytically. It is found that a superfluid phase is feasible above the speed of sound, when forces due to inhomogeneous non-equilibrium processes oppose ...

Volumetric Comparison of Overall Brain and Neuropil Size Between Social and Non‐social Spiders: Exploring the Social Brain Hypothesis

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Brain size may be influenced by the cognitive demands of sociality (social brain hypothesis). We used microCT to compare CNS and brain volumes in social versus solitary huntsman and crab spiders. Social huntsman spiders had larger arcuate and mushroom bodies, while social crab spiders had larger visual neuropils.

Regulating voltage-gated ion channels with nanobodies

open access: yesNature Communications, 2022
In this work, Morgenstern and colleagues describe an approach involving functionalized nanobodies which decrease the activity of voltage-gated Ca2+ channels associated with β1 subunits and promote their removal from the surface membrane of neurons and ...

Kinetics of Antibody Responses and Effector Cell Sensitivity After High Dose Birch Extract Nasal Challenge

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
High‐dose birch‐extract nasal challenge induced synchronous peaks at 4 weeks in serum specific IgE (sIgE) and basophil sensitivity. Mast cell sensitivity via tSPT and sIgG1 and sIgG4 responses peaked later, at 6–8 weeks. Preseasonal allergen exposure attenuated seasonal sIgE increase and prevented further rise in tSPT sensitivity.

International Delphi consensus on feminising genital surgery in assigned‐male‐at‐birth individuals

open access: yesBJU International, EarlyView.
Objective To achieve an international expert consensus among surgeons on the indications, contraindications, and perioperative management of feminising genital surgery (FGS) for assigned‐male‐at‐birth (AMAB) individuals, using a Delphi process. Methods A two‐round on‐line Delphi survey (May–July 2025) followed by a final consensus meeting (September ...

When in Doubt, Tax More Progressively? Uncertainty and Progressive Income Taxation

open access: yesInternational Economic Review, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We study the optimal income tax problem under parameter uncertainty about household preferences and wage dynamics. We derive conditions characterizing how such uncertainty affects optimal tax policy. To quantify the effect, we estimate a life‐cycle model using US data and a Bayesian approach.
