Morphing pasta and beyond

open access: yesScience Advances, 2021
Flat pasta with designed surface grooves can dynamically morph into three-dimensional shapes when boiled. Morphing structures are often engineered with stresses introduced into a flat sheet by leveraging structural anisotropy or compositional ...

Digital Actuation Control of Soft Robotic Origami With Self‐Folding Liquid Crystal Elastomer Hinges

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Self‐folding soft‐rigid hybrid robotic origami is enabled by liquid crystal elastomer actuators with embedded Joule heating and closed‐loop digital control. Digitally addressable hinges provide reversible and programmable transitions between distinct folded states while maintaining actuation performance at high cycle counts (over 1500).

Multidimensional integration through Markovian sampling under steered function morphing: a physical guise from statistical mechanics

open access: yes, 2014
We present a computational strategy for the evaluation of multidimensional integrals on hyper-rectangles based on Markovian stochastic exploration of the integration domain while the integrand is being morphed by starting from an initial appropriate ...

Blueprinting Photothermal Shape‐Morphing of Liquid Crystal Elastomers

open access: yesAdvances in Materials, 2020
Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are an attractive platform for dynamic shape‐morphing due to their ability to rapidly undergo large deformations. While recent work has focused on patterning the director orientation field to achieve desired target shapes,

Integrated method of guidance, control and morphing for hypersonic morphing vehicle in glide phase

open access: yes, 2021
The morphing technology of hypersonic vehicle improved the flight performance by changing aerodynamic characteristics with shape deformations, but the design of guidance and control system with morphing laws remained to be explored.

Meta‐Rod Mechanical Metamaterials With Programmable Reconfiguration

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Existing mechanical metamaterials achieve programmable large deformations in planar square or cubic configurations, restricted by required complex boundary conditions. This research proposes a 1D metamaterial, Meta‐rod, with linear, bending, twisting, area, and volume deformation modes.

Fast Fourier Transform Ensemble Kalman Filter with Application to a Coupled Atmosphere-Wildland Fire Model

open access: yes, 2010
We propose a new type of the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF), which uses the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) for covariance estimation from a very small ensemble with automatic tapering, and for a fast computation of the analysis ensemble by convolution ...

Sustainable Catalyst‐Free PLG Networks: Recyclability, Biodegradability, and Functional Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A catalyst‐additive free covalent adaptable network is developed from star‐shaped poly(lactide‐co‐glycolide) cross‐linked with pyromellitic dianhydride, enabling internal carboxylic acid‐driven transesterification. The resulting biodegradable network exhibits mechanical robustness (Young's modulus ≈1.6 GPa), complete recyclability, rapid biodegradation

Evading Classifiers by Morphing in the Dark

open access: yes, 2017
Learning-based systems have been shown to be vulnerable to evasion through adversarial data manipulation. These attacks have been studied under assumptions that the adversary has certain knowledge of either the target model internals, its training ...

External Reflection From Two‐Photon Laser‐Printed Micromirrors Enables Photomechanical Actuation at a 90° Incident Angle

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Light reflectance increases along incidence angle and transmittance significantly drops around 90‐degree incidence angle. Here, we report two‐photon laser printed micro mirrors that redirect the skimming light beam into normal light absorption. Using this technique, light‐driven micro walkers and grippers are demonstrated by using grazing incidence ...
