Intelligence for Morphing Aircraft

2022
Adding intelligence to uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) design to improve performance in a variety of dynamic environments offers benefits to many civilian and military mission objectives. Urban areas with tall buildings and vast street systems create drastic changes in the flight environment that are challenging for autonomous flight vehicles to overcome.

Morphing wings for unmanned aircraft

Smart Materials Bulletin, 2001
Abstract Here a computational model is presented which predicts the force, stroke and energy needed to overcome aerodynamic loads encountered by morphing wings, to perform aircraft manoeuvres. The aerodynamic load algorithms have been verified against more time-expensive codes.

Intelligent Control of a Morphing Aircraft

48th AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics, and Materials Conference, 2007
A morphing aircraft is able to drastically alter its planform to optimize performance at very dissimilar flight conditions. Despite significant strides to develop wing structure and actuation systems, much work remains to effectively control both the morphing wing as well as the entire morphing aircraft.

Modeling of Dynamic Loading of Morphing Wing Aircraft

AIAA Atmospheric Flight Mechanics Conference, 2010
The simulation of dynamic loads and required power is essential for the design of any morphing wing aircraft, since it ultimately determines the feasibility of a given morphing configuration. In this paper a methodology suitable for numerical calculation of the dynamic loads for a morphing-wing aircraft is presented.

On the effectiveness of active aeroelastic structures for morphing aircraft

The Aeronautical Journal, 2013
AbstractThis note assesses the benefits of active aeroelastic structures (AAS) in enhancing flight performance and control authority. A representative AAS concept, whose torsional stiffness and shear centre position can be altered depending on the instantaneous flight condition, is employed in the wing of a medium altitude long endurance (MALE) UAV.

Morphing Aircraft: An Improbable Dream?

Volume 1: Development and Characterization of Multifunctional Materials; Modeling, Simulation and Control of Adaptive Systems; Structural Health Monitoring; Keynote Presentation, 2014
Compliant aircraft, with a range of deformations comparable to birds, has been a dream for many years. Earlier aviation pioneers tried to replicate aspects of bird flight, but higher air speeds and larger payloads have required aircraft design to deviate from their biological inspiration.

Morphing Aircraft Technology Survey

45th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit, 2007
*Morphing research projects will revolutionize the costs of building and operating aircraft. These technologies will enable aircraft to be more effi cient and operate under a wide range of varying flight conditions. Morphing technologies will be used to improve aircraft performance, expand its flight envelope, replace conventional control surfaces ...

Design of Morphing Aircraft for Aeroelastic Performance

2020 IEEE Aerospace Conference, 2020
Morphing mechanisms, inspired by biological fliers, offer a lucrative option for controlling aircraft geometry for mitigating adverse aeroelastic phenomena, and potentially using the aircraft flexibility of the aircraft to our advantage. But, in order to enable morphing aircraft, there is a need to determine suitable morphing mechanisms; develop ...

Structural shape sensing for morphing aircraft

SPIE Proceedings, 2003
This paper represents a "work-in-progress" status report on shape determination and sensing methods for deforming structures utilizing embedded sensors. This work is part of a larger effort in morphing aircraft structures at the Air Force Research Laboratory.

Control of an Adaptive Aircraft with a Morphing Input

50th AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics, and Materials Conference, 2009
An adaptive aircraft has been designed with new degrees of freedom, morphing control inputs, that will allow it to morph its structure to perform a new range of maneuvers. In particular is the capability to land through a perching maneuver, similar to that performed by large, migratory birds.
