A Review of Morphing Aircraft

open access: yesJournal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures, 2011
Aircraft wings are a compromise that allows the aircraft to fly at a range of flight conditions, but the performance at each condition is sub-optimal. The ability of a wing surface to change its geometry during flight has interested researchers and designers over the years as this reduces the design compromises required. Morphing is the short form for

Elastomer-based skins for morphing aircraft applications: Effect of biaxial strain rates and prestretch

open access: yesPolymer Testing, 2022
There is an emerging trend in the morphing aircraft research where two or more morphing degrees of freedom are used on a wing which leads to the concept of polymorphing.

3D Zero Poisson’s Ratio Honeycomb Structure for Morphing Wing Applications

open access: yesBiomimetics, 2022
Such as flying creatures, morphing aircraft can expand their aerodynamic flight envelopes by changing aerodynamic shapes, significantly improving the scope of application and flight efficiency. A novel 3D Zero Poisson’s Ratio (ZPR) honeycomb structure is

Characterization of Nitinol Produced by Laser Powder Bed Fusion for Mechanical Metamaterial Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Stabilization of L‐PBF Ni50.7Ti49.3 under low‐cycle loading was investigated. Recoverable strain after cycling was dependent on the amount of applied load. Recovery ratio was 53.4% and 35.1% at intermediate and high load, respectively. The maximum total strain reached 10.3% at a high load of 1200 MPa.
