NONLINEAR AEROELASTIC ANALYSIS OF A MORPHING FLAP
International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos, 2012A morphing flap integrated with an actuation mechanism was designed and investigated. Based on structure parameters from static experiments, a finite element model of the flap was created within MSC Patran software. Normal modal analysis and linear flutter analysis were carried out firstly.

Global optimization of actively morphing flapping wings
Journal of Fluids and Structures, 2012Abstract We consider active shape morphing to optimize the flight performance of flapping wings. To this end, we combine a three-dimensional version of the unsteady vortex lattice method (UVLM) with a deterministic global optimization algorithm to identify the optimal kinematics that maximize the propulsive efficiency under lift and thrust ...

Energy-minimizing kinematics for actively morphing flapping-foil thrusters
SNAME 8th International Symposium on Ship Operations, Management and Economics, 2023Bio-inspired thruster designs based on flapping-foils have the potential to achieve high efficiency and stealth, thus allowing for an extension of the overall operational capabilities of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) propelled solely using foils.

Folding in and out: passive morphing in flapping wings
Bioinspiration & Biomimetics, 2015We present a new mechanism for passive wing morphing of flapping wings inspired by bat and bird wing morphology. The mechanism consists of an unactuated hand wing connected to the arm wing with a wrist joint. Flapping motion generates centrifugal accelerations in the hand wing, forcing it to unfold passively.

Morphing Flap Concept to Reduce the Flap Side Edge Noise for Aircraft Wing Slotted Flaps
52nd Aerospace Sciences Meeting, 2014To reduce the aeroacoustic noise of wings with high lift devices, a morphing flap concept has been investigated, which has smoothly contoured flap connected smoothly to the outer main wing. Wind tunnel tests for NACA23012 half span wing model with flexible morphing slotted flap was conducted in Kyushu university 2m x 2m low-noise low-speed wind tunnel,

Morphing Trailing Edge Flap for High Lift Wing
52nd AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics and Materials Conference, 2011This paper presents the study conducted to design and analyze a morphing trailing edge flap structure for a large aircraft wing. The rear part of the trailing edge flap was modified to be integrated with a set of internal actuation mechanisms distributed along the span of the flap. Additional changes to the conventional flap structure were implemented,

Flap Architecture by Morphing Trailing Edges
International Journal of Current Engineering and Technology, 2010This paper proposes flap architecture for a variable camber trailing edge, whose reference geometry is based on a full scale wing for a regional transport aircraft. The compliant rib is based on a truss-like structure where some members are active rods made of Shape Memory Alloy (SMA).

A SMA-based morphing flap: conceptual and advanced design
Smart Structures and Systems, 2015In the work at hand, the development of a morphing flap, actuated through shape memory alloy load bearing elements, is described. Moving from aerodynamic specifications, prescribing the morphed shape enhancing the aerodynamic efficiency of the flap, a suitable actuation architecture was identified, able to affect the curvature. Each rib of the flap was

A single slotted morphing flap based on SMA technology
Smart Structures and Systems, 2016In this paper, the activities carried out within the EU funded Clean Sky Joint Technology Initiative (JTI GRA) Project and aimed at developing a morphing flap, are illustrated. The reference device is a regional aircraft single slotted flap, enhanced with deforming capabilities to obtain improved hyper-lift performance.
