Morphing Models of a Bat Wing in Flapping Flight

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2013
Kinematic models, which contain flapping and deformations, of a bat flapping wing when it flies at medium speeds are presented in the study. The deformations include cambering - morphing in the chordwise direction, bending - morphing in the spanwise direction and twisting respecting angles of attack (AOA) varying along the length of the wing.

Optimisation of blended bistable laminates for a morphing flap

Composite Structures, 2012
Abstract Multistable composites offer significant deformations in stable shapes, and, this makes them interesting for morphing applications. Moreover, bistable laminates can be manufactured to have variable angle tows (VATs) in a ply using a tow-steering technique to ensure continuity of fibres over the planform of the laminates and, in doing so, may

Cruise Performance Optimization of the Airbus A320 through Flap Morphing

17th AIAA Aviation Technology, Integration, and Operations Conference, 2017
In the era of increasing aviation traffic the conditions are right to promote design of ambitious concepts. At Fokker Aerostructures attention is drawn to smooth in-flight shape morphing to produce a structurally functional Variable Camber Trailing Edge Flap (VCTEF).

Topology optimization of pressure adaptive honeycomb for a morphing flap

SPIE Proceedings, 2011
The paper begins with a brief historical overview of pressure adaptive materials and structures. By examining avian anatomy, it is seen that pressure-adaptive structures have been used successfully in the Natural world to hold structural positions for extended periods of time and yet allow for dynamic shape changes from one flight state to the next ...

Structural design and optimization of a morphing wing trailing edge flap

Aerospace Systems, 2018
This paper presents the structural design and optimization process of a morphing wing trailing edge (TE) flap. The flap consists of flexible upper and lower skins and various connections that constrains the relative motion between the upper and lower skins, and is actuated by an eccentric beam to which several discs of variable radii and setting angles

Design optimization of a morphing flap device using variable stiffness materials

24th AIAA/AHS Adaptive Structures Conference, 2016
Morphing structures that are both light-weight and remain conformal to the airfoil are promising candidates for the next generation of aircraft high-lift systems. Notably, variable stiffness materials have also been studied for the application in morphing structures for their potential to enhance structural performance.

Validation of a smart structural concept for wing-flap camber morphing

Smart Structures and Systems, 2014
The study is aimed at investigating the feasibility of a high TRL solution for a wing flap segment characterized by morphable camber airfoil and properly tailored to be implemented on a real-scale regional transportation aircraft. On the base of specific aerodynamic requirements in terms of target airfoil shapes and related external loads, the ...
