Pressurized Morphing Wing Structures
53rd AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics and Materials Conference
20th AIAA/ASME/AHS Adaptive Structures Conference
14th AIAA, 2012The combination of structural material and fluid pressure may result in a morphing structure with integrated shape-change and stiffness functions. In a cellular arrangement, distributed actuation, high control fidelity and a multitude of morphing shapes can also be achieved.

Analysis of bat wings for morphing
SPIE Proceedings, 2008The morphing of wings from three different bat species is studied using an extension of the Weissinger method. To understand how camber affects performance factors such as lift and lift to drag ratio, XFOIL is used to study thin (3% thickness to chord ratio) airfoils at a low Reynolds number of 100,000.

Wing Line Discretization for the Development of a Modular Morphing Wing
52nd AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics and Materials Conference, 2011This paper presents a discretization method for the development of a modular morphing wing. The proposed method determines the number of morphing wing modules and their respective spacing required to emulate a known wing shape associated with a particular flight regime/requirement. This method consists of two main steps.

Modeling of Dynamic Loading of Morphing Wing Aircraft
AIAA Atmospheric Flight Mechanics Conference, 2010The simulation of dynamic loads and required power is essential for the design of any morphing wing aircraft, since it ultimately determines the feasibility of a given morphing configuration. In this paper a methodology suitable for numerical calculation of the dynamic loads for a morphing-wing aircraft is presented.

Abstract In this paper, a sliding mode flight controller is formulated in order to enhance the lateral maneuverability for a tailless telescopic wing morphing aircraft by using additional asymmetric wing telescoping. Based on the nonlinear time-varying equations of motion and the approximate aerodynamic model obtained by wind tunnel tests, a ...

Folding in and out: passive morphing in flapping wings
Bioinspiration & Biomimetics, 2015We present a new mechanism for passive wing morphing of flapping wings inspired by bat and bird wing morphology. The mechanism consists of an unactuated hand wing connected to the arm wing with a wrist joint. Flapping motion generates centrifugal accelerations in the hand wing, forcing it to unfold passively.
