AbstractBackgroundEpistaxis is a common emergency presentation to ENT. The ‘Epistaxis 2016: national audit of management’ collected prospective data over a 30-day audit window in 113 centres. A 30-day all-cause mortality rate of 3.4 per cent was identified.

This review summarizes recent developments in maternal mortality surveillance, and draws from recent confidential mortality reports to suggest ways the anesthesiologist can contribute to safer systems of care.Maternal mortality rates appear to be static in much of the developed world, but are increasing in the USA.

In chapter 6, I have shown that the problem of finitude plays a relevant part in shaping the specific social world of self-help groups. In the present chapter, I shall further examine the impact of this problem on the social relations of persons with HIV.
